‘Avatar: Seven Havens’ Just Revealed Exactly How Far Into the Future Its Story Takes Place

The Avatar franchise has always understood the power of time jumps, using them to reshape entire worlds and introduce audiences to civilizations that feel both familiar and completely transformed. That storytelling tradition began with ‘The Legend of Korra,’ which leapt 70 years past the events of ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ to show how bending, technology, and society had all evolved.

Now, as the franchise prepares to expand once again with its third animated series, that same time-jump strategy is being pushed even further. ‘Avatar: Seven Havens,’ created by original series masterminds Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, follows Avatar Pavi, the successor and reincarnation of Korra, as she and her long-lost twin sister Nisha uncover their mysterious origins in a dramatically changed world.

That new world, it turns out, exists a staggering 225 years after the events of ‘The Legend of Korra,’ according to reporting from Polygon. That places the series roughly three centuries removed from the original ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender,’ making it by far the most distant point in the franchise’s timeline explored on screen so far.

That massive time gap helps explain just how unrecognizable the setting has become compared to Korra’s Republic City. According to the show’s official logline, ‘Seven Havens’ is set in a world shattered by a devastating cataclysm, where Pavi discovers she’s the new Avatar in an era that views the title as a mark of humanity’s destroyer rather than its savior.

That framing represents a significant tonal shift for the franchise, transforming the Avatar from a revered spiritual guardian into a figure feared and hunted by both human and spirit enemies. Pavi and Nisha must work together to save the Seven Havens, described as the last surviving strongholds of civilization, before they collapse entirely.

DiMartino and Konietzko have spoken about the significance of returning to this world after so many years away from new animated storytelling. Speaking to Variety when the series was first ordered, the pair explained that when they created the original show, they never imagined they’d still be expanding its world decades later, describing this new incarnation of the Avatarverse as full of fantasy, mystery, and an entirely new cast of characters.

Pushing the timeline out by 225 years gives the creative team enormous freedom to reinvent the franchise’s technology, culture, and political landscape without being tightly bound to the established rules of Korra’s more industrialized era. It also raises significant questions about what happened to the spirit portals, bending traditions, and surviving nations fans last saw at the end of ‘The Legend of Korra.’

The series arrives as part of the franchise’s 20th anniversary celebrations, timed to coincide with the two-decade milestone since ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ first premiered in 2005. Saheli Khan leads the voice cast as Avatar Pavi, joined by Aishu Devan, Akshay Khanna, and other newcomers introducing an entirely new ensemble to the Avatarverse.

Animation duties fall to La Chouette Compagnie, a French studio whose art direction reportedly draws influence from French surrealist artist Mœbius and 1990s anime, giving the series a visual identity distinct from its predecessors. Composer Jeremy Zuckerman, who scored both previous Avatar series, returns to handle the music once again.

With such a massive gap between ‘Seven Havens’ and the rest of the franchise’s established timeline, longtime fans will likely spend the show’s early episodes piecing together exactly how the Avatar world evolved over those 225 years. That mystery alone could become one of the series’ biggest draws once it premieres.

‘Avatar: Seven Havens’ is set to debut on Paramount+ on October 9, giving fans just weeks left to speculate about what’s become of the world Aang and Korra once fought so hard to protect.
