Apple TV+ has released a new TV version of Cape Fear, a psychological thriller based on the 1957 novel The Executioners by John D. MacDonald. The story was first made into a film in 1962 and then again in 1991 by Martin Scorsese.

The new series is created by Nick Antosca and brings a fresh take on the same dark story. It also includes a surprise return from Juliette Lewis, who was part of the 1991 movie.

Juliette Lewis is back in the Cape Fear world in a small role, and the creator explained why he wanted her involved again. He said he had worked with her before on the Hulu series The Act, and that experience left a strong impression on him. He already knew how talented she was and wanted to work with her again in some way. He said, “I love Juliette Lewis. When I first started thinking about doing this show, re-imagining Cape Fear, I was working with Juliette on an episode of The Act where she guest-starred.”

He also explained that the idea stayed with him for a long time, even before the project became real. Getting the rights to make the show took years, and nothing moved quickly at first. But once everything was finally in place, he made sure she was part of it. He said, “It took years for the rights and stuff for Cape Fear to come together, but I always knew and had been thinking even then that I wanted Juliette to be involved and wanted to work with her again. So, I was really excited when she wanted to come hang out with us.”

The new Cape Fear series has a strong cast. Javier Bardem plays Max Cady, a dangerous former prisoner who is released and starts seeking revenge. He targets attorney couple Anna and Tom Bowden, played by Amy Adams and Patrick Wilson, who were once involved in his original trial. The show also includes Joe Anders, Lily Collias, CCH Pounder, and Malia Pyles in supporting roles. The series also has big names behind the scenes, with Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg serving as executive producers, which connects the show back to its long film history.

Juliette Lewis was famously in the 1991 film version of Cape Fear, where she played Danielle Bowden. In the new series, she does not play that same character. Instead, she appears in a different role connected to Max Cady’s storyline, and she shows up early in the series as someone who crosses paths with him in a tense way. The show started streaming on Apple TV+ and releases new episodes weekly on Fridays, with the season finale set for late July.

Early reactions have been mostly positive, with critics noting the strong performances and dark tone. The series continues to build on the legacy of both earlier films while also trying a new direction for modern TV audiences.
