Carter Survived ‘Yellowstone’ and Now He’s Getting a Real Redemption Arc in ‘Dutton Ranch’
For anyone who feared the worst for Carter during the chaotic final stretch of ‘Yellowstone’, the answer is a clear and emphatic no. He does not die. In fact, the scrappy orphan who stumbled into the orbit of Beth and Rip Wheeler walked away from the series finale with more than his life, he walked away with a family.
Now, with the ‘Yellowstone‘ spinoff ‘Dutton Ranch‘ already streaming on Paramount+, Carter’s story is picking up right where it left off, and the trajectory looks more promising than ever.
Carter’s Fate in ‘Yellowstone’ Season 5
The road to Carter’s finale ending was not without serious heartbreak. In Season 5 Episode 12, Carter was cornered in a horse stall by an uncontrollable three-year-old male horse. Colby walked by and saw Carter was in trouble, jumped into the stall to push the horse back, and gave Carter time to crawl to safety. Colby was unable to escape himself and was killed by the horse.

Carter escaped and shot the horse, but not before it had swiftly kicked and instantly killed Colby. The guilt hit Carter hard, arriving on top of an already devastating period. This event had a big impact on Carter, making him feel even more guilty and sad, especially since John Dutton had just died. When Carter confided in Beth that he blamed himself for Colby’s death, she comforted him and reminded him of his place in their family.
In the Season 5 finale, Carter was shown being a little happier, and his character received proper closure. Near the beginning of the episode, Beth revealed to Rip that she had bought a ranch in West Montana, and at the end of the episode, when it showed Rip and Beth at their new ranch, it revealed that Carter came along with them.
Carter’s New Life in ‘Dutton Ranch’
Despite Beth and Rip’s move to a new Montana ranch at the end of the original series, ‘Dutton Ranch’ actually takes place in Texas. The official synopsis describes Beth and Rip fighting to build a future together far from the ghosts of ‘Yellowstone’, colliding with brutal new realities and a ruthless rival ranch. “In South Texas, blood runs deeper, forgiveness is fleeting, and the cost of survival might just be your soul.”
The official description of the show reads that Beth and Rip are grateful for the peace they sought, fought, and nearly died for, noting the show will follow them “ensuring Carter becomes the man he’s supposed to be.” For fans who watched Carter bounce between bunkhouse background moments for most of Season 5, this level of intentional focus on his arc is a long overdue development.
After spending the last few years of his life as ‘Yellowstone Dutton Ranch’s “low man,” ‘Dutton Ranch’ promises many new opportunities for Carter. In the spinoff, he meets Oreana, played by Natalie Alyn Lind, a Rio Paloma local with secrets who could represent trouble. Finn Little told PEOPLE that Carter sees a lot of Beth in Oreana, that fierceness and that strong personality, and that is what attracts Carter to her.
Finn Little’s Return and the Road to ‘Dutton Ranch’
‘Dutton Ranch’ premiered on May 15, 2026, on Paramount+. Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser reprise their roles as Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler. Finn Little was confirmed to reprise his role as Carter in July 2025. Annette Bening, Ed Harris, and Jai Courtney were also cast in main roles.
What makes Finn Little’s return all the more charming is how last-minute it apparently was. Little told People that he was informed about ‘Dutton Ranch’ only a week before it was set to start filming, recalling that it was just a case of “Hey, it’s happening, hope you’re ready,” and his response was simply, “Oh, alright. Let’s go.” He added that he wanted to see more from Carter and wanted to keep playing the character.
The Australian actor was cast as Carter when he was 14. Now 19, he says the show and the character has been his life in recent memory. That five-year gap between casting and the spinoff premiere is visible on screen, and the show is clearly leaning into the fact that Carter is no longer a lost kid but a young man finding his footing.
What ‘Dutton Ranch’ Means for Carter’s Legacy
Although the original ‘Yellowstone’ was cut short with only a handful of episodes to wrap up everything after Kevin Costner’s unexpected departure, there seemed to be a trajectory to set up the next generation of young people who would fight for the Dutton Ranch. Carter can now provide that perspective that ‘Yellowstone’ never got the chance to follow through on.
One way Carter will follow in Rip’s footsteps is by having a teenage love interest. Beth and Rip famously began their tumultuous relationship on the ‘Yellowstone Dutton Ranch’ when they were teens. ‘Dutton Ranch’ is naturally focused on Beth and Rip, but Carter is also poised to get more spotlight than he had on ‘Yellowstone’, representing a massive opportunity for Finn Little as an actor to stand out and evolve the character.
The highly anticipated spinoff has been described by some as “Yellowstone Season 6,” with Little himself promising that if you love Beth and Rip, you will love ‘Dutton Ranch’ and all the new problems that come along with it. The bones of everything that made Carter worth rooting for in the first place, the grief, the grit, and the desperate need for belonging, are still very much intact.
Carter’s survival was never really in question once the writers decided he was the future of this universe. The more compelling question now is how far they are willing to push him and whether audiences watching ‘Dutton Ranch’ are ready to see that quiet, bruised kid from the hospital parking lot finally step into something that looks a lot like his own story. Are you already seeing hints of who Carter is becoming in the new episodes, or do you think the spinoff still has more to prove before it earns his full redemption arc?
