Charlie Cox Has a Disappointing Update on Daredevil’s MCU Future

Charlie Cox has spent years navigating one of the trickiest parts of playing Matt Murdock in the Marvel Cinematic Universe: constantly getting asked whether his crime-fighting alter ego will show up in the franchise’s biggest crossover events. Between surprise cameos in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ and ‘She-Hulk: Attorney at Law,’ fans have had plenty of reason to expect Daredevil might eventually join the Avengers on the big screen.

That speculation only intensified once Marvel confirmed ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ as the next two massive team-up films closing out the Multiverse Saga. Cox’s name was notably absent from the star-studded ‘Doomsday’ cast reveal, sparking months of theories about whether his exclusion was a genuine snub or just clever misdirection from a studio well known for hiding its biggest surprises.

Now, Cox has addressed the speculation directly, and this time he’s leaving little room for doubt. Speaking at MCM Comic Con in Birmingham this weekend, the actor confirmed he will not be appearing as Daredevil in ‘Avengers: Secret Wars,’ putting an end to months of rumors tying him to the film.

When a fan at the event’s Spotlight panel asked whether Daredevil would be joining the Avengers in ‘Secret Wars,’ Cox gave a direct answer, saying no and telling the audience they should believe him this time, according to Cosmic Book News. The comment carried extra weight given his history of denying MCU appearances that later turned out to be true, most notably his repeated denials of appearing in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ before his cameo was revealed.

Cox’s track record with these kinds of denials has made his comments something of a running joke among fans, who’ve grown used to taking his statements with a grain of salt. That skepticism was reinforced earlier this year when Cox also denied any involvement in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day,’ a claim that turned out to be entirely accurate once the film released and confirmed his absence.

Cox appeared at the convention alongside his ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ co-star Deborah Ann Woll, who plays Karen Page in the Disney+ series. Beyond addressing the Secret Wars question, Cox also used the panel to share a previously unreleased detail about a deleted scene from the first season of ‘Born Again,’ involving a dinner party sequence that leaned into a lighter, more comedic version of Matt Murdock before the show’s tone was retooled.

Despite Cox’s direct denial, some uncertainty still lingers given Marvel’s well-documented history of misdirection during marketing cycles. The studio has previously confirmed actors were part of major ensemble films without including them in initial cast reveals, as was the case with Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange casting for ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’

Cox himself has acknowledged in past interviews that Marvel has told him his focus remains squarely on ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ for now, while leaving open the possibility of a crossover appearance somewhere down the line. With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ arriving this December ahead of ‘Secret Wars’ the following year, fans will have to wait and see whether this latest denial holds up, or joins the long list of Marvel secrets Cox has kept under wraps before.
