Charlie Cox Remembers Keeping His Mouth Shut When He Learned He Would Return as Matt Murdock in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’

Charlie Cox, the actor who plays Daredevil, recently talked about his cameo in Spider-Man: No Way Home. In the latest issue of Disney’s D23 magazine, he called it a “two-year nightmare.”
Cox said, “When they told me I was going to be in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home,’ it was a two-year nightmare trying to keep that from everyone.” He had to keep his role a secret for a long time.
Cox played Matt Murdock, Peter Parker’s lawyer, in the 2021 movie. Fans loved seeing him back as Daredevil. Theaters cheered when he appeared on screen (at least mine did – I heard some folks didn’t recognize him, which is a bummer).
He said, “Sometimes it feels as though things happen out of nowhere. Vince and I were like, ‘Great! I guess we’re going back to work.'” Vincent D’Onofrio, who plays Kingpin, also returned to the MCU around the same time in the Hawkeye series.
The cameo happened because Marvel boss Kevin Feige called Cox in June 2020. From then until the movie came out in December 2021, Cox couldn’t tell anyone. That secrecy was tough for him.
After Spider-Man: No Way Home, Cox appeared in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law in 2022 and in 2023’s Echo. Now, after six years, he has finally returned in his own show (which is on par with Netflix’s, thankfully).
Keeping his role hidden helped make the movie a big surprise for fans. It’s part of how Marvel keeps people excited. Other actors, like Andrew Garfield, faced the same challenge during No Way Home. Now, Cox is happy to be back as Daredevil and working again.
Cox’s “nightmare” shows how hard it can be to keep secrets in big movies like this. But it paid off—fans went wild, and it set him up for more Daredevil roles. I think it’s cool he stuck it out, even if it was stressful. What do you think about actors keeping these secrets? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
