Red carpet season for Christopher Nolan’s mythological epic has turned into its own kind of spectacle, with each stop on the press tour delivering a fresh wave of standout looks. Zendaya’s Schiaparelli moment and Anne Hathaway’s flowing gown already had fashion watchers buzzing before the night was even over.

Then Charlize Theron arrived. The actress made her first appearance in The Odyssey’s promotional run at Monday’s world premiere in London, stepping onto the carpet outside Odeon Luxe Leicester Square in a look that immediately split opinion among style critics covering the event.

Theron wore a black velvet gown from Givenchy’s Fall 2026 collection, designed by Sarah Burton, paired with a pair of oversized white arm warmers that dominated the conversation around her outfit. The gown itself leaned sleek and draped, with a high neck balanced against a leg slit that gave the silhouette some tension, but it was the voluminous gloves that became the true talking point of the night.

Fashion commentators were divided on whether the accessory choice elevated the look or worked against it. Some praised the stark contrast between the black velvet and the bright white gloves as a striking style statement, while others felt the oversized proportions disrupted what would have otherwise been a clean, elegant line.

The gloves themselves were pulled directly from Givenchy’s runway presentation, though reports noted they appeared even longer on Theron than they had during the original show. That extra length only intensified reactions, turning what might have been a subtle nod to the collection into the dominant feature of her entire look.

Theron completed the outfit with drop earrings that echoed the cascading back panel of the gown, along with a hairstyle that mixed darker and lighter blonde pieces pulled back for added texture. The overall effect placed her among a night full of actresses using contrast, whether in color, texture or accessories, as the defining theme of their red carpet choices.

Theron’s look arrived as just one piece of a much larger fashion story unfolding at the premiere. The night also saw Zendaya debut a Schiaparelli Haute Couture gown fresh off the Paris runway, Mia Goth in a beaded Dior Cruise dress, and Anne Hathaway in a blue gown accented with a flower-like detail at the top.

With Theron playing the nymph Calypso in Nolan’s adaptation of Homer’s epic, her dramatic black and white ensemble fit neatly into a broader pattern among the film’s leading women, each using their premiere looks to hint at the mythological scale of the story itself. Whether audiences remember the gloves fondly or as a fashion misstep, the look succeeded in doing exactly what a premiere outfit is supposed to do, getting people talking.

The Odyssey opens in theaters on July 17, giving Theron and her castmates plenty more red carpet stops to refine, or double down on, their boldest looks yet.
