You remember the time when Donald Trump was just a TV personality and a rich guy? He was there, but no one really paid much attention to him, and he was known for his (un)successful business endeavors, his bankruptcies, and his reality shows. He was a controversial figure but more or less an irrelevant one.

At one point, the now-Republican President was actually a member of the Democratic Party as well. At one point, he also had a better working relationship with almost everyone, including people from the entertainment industry.

Thanks to his connections and friendships, Trump had cameo appearances in several works, including the 1992 movie Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, a sequel to the hit Home Alone. In a brief scene, Trump talked to Kevin and thus became a part of the fanchise’s history. Now, director Chris Columbus wants him out of the movie.

Chris Columbus is a well-known industry name and the director has given us numerous children and family-friendly films that have since become classics. Whether they’re based on reality or fantasy, Columbus’ films have always had a certain dose of magic to them.

Home Alone 2: Lost in New York is one such work but the director believes that Trump’s presence in the movie is destroying the movie’s legacy and magic. As he said, the scene “become this curse. It’s become an albatross for me. I just wish it was gone.”

So, why is he not cutting it? “I can’t cut it,” the director added with a dose of sarcasm. “If I cut it, I’ll probably be sent out of the country. I’ll be considered sort of not fit to live in the United States, so I’ll have to go back to Italy or something.”

And while the cameo seemed benign from our perspective – that of the viewers – Columbus said that Trump basically bullied his way into the movie, which was shot in the Plaza. “We paid the fee, but he also said, ‘The only way you can use the Plaza is if I’m in the movie’,” he said. “So we agreed to put him in the movie, and when we screened it for the first time the oddest thing happened: People cheered when Trump showed up on screen. So I said to my editor, ‘Leave him in the movie. It’s a moment for the audience.’”

Trump, of course, has a different version of that same story, one in which he was busy, but Columbus and the crew begged him to appear so, out of the goodness of his heart, he accepted. Based on how adamant Columbus is in his desire to have him cut from the movie – there was even a petition to digitally replace Trump with a 40-year-old Macaulay Culkin that he endorsed – we don’t think Trump’s version of the story is the correct one.
