Chris Evans Finally Reveals Why It Took Eight Years and Robert Downey Jr’s Return to Bring Him Back in The MCU
Chris Evans has spent years insisting his story as Steve Rogers ended with ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ and for a long time fans genuinely believed him. The actor walked away from the role in 2018 with one of the most emotional send offs in Marvel Cinematic Universe history, handing off the shield and stepping back from a character that defined over a decade of his career.
But ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ has brought Rogers back into the fold, and Evans is now opening up about just how much convincing that took. Speaking during a panel appearance alongside Paul Rudd, Evans revealed that Marvel spent nearly eight years trying to lure him back, and he said no more times than fans probably realize.
According to Evans, the pitching started almost immediately after ‘Endgame’ wrapped. He said that when the film finished in 2018, producer Lou D’Esposito and Marvel chief Kevin Feige took him to dinner and told him they wanted to keep making movies with Steve Rogers reimagined as Nomad, an alternate identity Rogers takes on in the comics. Evans agreed to hear them out, and what followed was, in his words, a genuinely strong pitch.
Still, something about the timing never clicked. Evans explained that the idea didn’t feel right at that moment, admitting he was protective of the character and wanted to preserve what he had already built with Rogers rather than rush into something new. He told Marvel to keep the ideas coming anyway, and apparently they took him at his word.
Over the following eight years, Evans says he heard roughly a dozen different pitches for his return, and he described all of them as well crafted. None of them managed to break through his hesitation, and Evans admitted the repeated near misses even made him wonder if his time as Rogers had simply run its course for good.
What finally changed his mind wasn’t a script at all. Evans revealed that hearing rumors Robert Downey Jr. was returning to Marvel as the villainous Doctor Doom is what made everything suddenly feel right, and once director Joe Russo brought him the actual pitch, he knew it was time. The idea of stepping back into the MCU alongside Downey again seems to have carried a weight none of the earlier pitches could match.
‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is now shaping up as one of the most heavily anticipated ensemble films Marvel has ever assembled, and Rogers returning as part of that lineup adds another layer of stakes fans didn’t expect. With the film’s December release creeping closer, it’s clear Evans didn’t come back lightly, and that hesitation is part of what makes this comeback feel significant.
