The costume change was dramatic, trading in the red white and blue for something far more subdued. However the experiment did not last long in the comics. Marvel debuted Nomad in Captain America number 180, and by issue 184, Rogers was already back to his old identity.

It is also worth noting that Steve Rogers was not the only person to use the Nomad name. Jack Monroe, a former partner of Captain America, also operated under the Nomad identity during comic storylines in the 1970s, and other characters including Rikki Barnes have since taken on the alias as well.

The timing of these comic book callbacks lines up almost perfectly with what insiders are now saying about ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’ Insider Jeff Sneider has stated that Evans is set to take on the identity of Nomad in the upcoming film, a rumor that has been circulating in various forms since as early as 2020.

There is also a deeper production history behind this idea that goes beyond a passing rumor. Marvel Studios reportedly began developing a standalone Nomad project starring Evans back in 2020, though the project never made it into production for a number of reasons.

According to former Marvel Studios screenwriter Beau DeMayo, that shelved project would have explored how Steve Rogers’ actions in ‘Avengers: Endgame’ created an alternate branch of reality where Howard Stark became a villainous Hydra affiliated version of Iron Man, with inspiration drawn from The Man in the High Castle.

Interestingly, this would not be the first time the Russo Brothers have flirted with this identity on screen. Although Evans’ Rogers has never officially gone by the Nomad name in the films, the Russos actually began that visual journey for the character all the way back in ‘Avengers: Infinity War.’ That earlier stripped down, beard and civilian jacket look is widely seen among fans as the unofficial birth of Nomad within the MCU itself.
