That kind of ending typically stays put in superhero storytelling, which made Chris Evans’ eventual return to the role feel like anything but a routine cameo. The actor has been candid about turning down multiple pitches to bring Steve back over the years before finally agreeing that ‘Doomsday’ was the right story to justify it.

Speaking at Fan Expo Boston, Evans offered his most direct comments yet on what that return actually entails, and the picture he painted wasn’t a gentle one. Evans said the new film puts Steve Rogers through “a really, really good examination into his nature and his values,” adding that it’s “probably something you guys haven’t seen yet, but you will,” according to Just Jared.

That framing fits a pattern Evans has pointed to before when discussing his history with the Russo brothers, who are directing ‘Doomsday’ after previously helming ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier,’ ‘Captain America: Civil War,’ ‘Avengers: Infinity War,’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame.’ Evans has joked that the directing duo has a longstanding habit of putting Steve through the wringer, framing his ability to keep getting back up after being knocked down as central to what makes him a hero in their eyes.

According to Evans, that tendency continues in ‘Doomsday,’ except this time it goes further than anything the character has faced in previous films. He specifically called this new ordeal “brutal,” distinguishing it from the more straightforward physical punishment Steve has endured in past Avengers entries.

Fans have already started connecting Evans’ comments to broader speculation swirling around the film’s plot.
