Kevin Feige Just Called ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Star Robert Downey Jr. the “Greatest Actor of His Time”

Marvel Studios has spent the better part of a decade trying to figure out how to bring one of its most iconic villains to the screen, and the results have been shaky at best. Doctor Doom has already appeared in two separate Fantastic Four film franchises, first with Julian McMahon in the 2005 and 2007 movies, then with Toby Kebbell in the 2015 reboot, and neither version is remembered fondly by fans of the character.

That history has made the stakes for ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ considerably higher than a typical villain introduction. The film is being positioned as the centerpiece of Marvel’s next Multiverse Saga chapter, uniting the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men across multiple franchises, all built around a character that Empire Magazine itself has noted has never quite been done right in live action.

That pressure landed squarely on Robert Downey Jr., who is stepping into the role of Victor Von Doom after previously spending over a decade as Tony Stark before his character’s death in ‘Avengers: Endgame.’ Speaking with Empire, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige addressed that challenge directly and made clear just how much confidence he has in Downey’s ability to pull it off.

Feige called Downey “the greatest actor of his time” and said he “can pull off anything,” according to Empire. He also revealed that Downey found his interpretation of the character fairly quickly once development began, suggesting the transition from hero to villain came together faster than the weight of the role might have implied.

That level of praise fits into a broader pattern for how Feige has talked about the decision to bring Downey back at all. Feige has separately explained that the idea of pairing Downey with Doctor Doom actually predates Marvel’s public pivot away from Kang the Conqueror as the Multiverse Saga’s central villain, following Jonathan Majors’ legal troubles and the underwhelming box office reception of ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.’

Feige has said conversations with Downey about the idea of playing Doom had already begun before ‘Ant-Man 3’ even hit theaters, meaning the plan had been quietly taking shape well before circumstances forced Marvel’s hand. He has framed it as a long-term bet built around pairing one of Marvel’s greatest characters with one of its greatest actors.

Downey’s own past comments about returning to Marvel echo that same sense of inevitability. After winning his Academy Award for ‘Oppenheimer,’ Downey indicated he would happily return to the franchise, describing it as an integral part of who he is as a performer.

The full cast surrounding Downey in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ reflects just how large-scale the film’s ambitions are. Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Vanessa Kirby, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach are all set to appear alongside X-Men veterans including Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, and Rebecca Romijn, bringing multiple corners of Marvel’s cinematic history into a single story.

With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ set to hit theaters on December 18, Feige’s comments make clear the studio is treating Downey’s performance as the film’s central selling point, not just another villain reveal. Whether audiences agree that Marvel has finally cracked the character remains to be seen once the film actually arrives.
