Marvel fans spend plenty of time debating hypothetical team-ups, but it hits differently when the question comes straight from someone who actually wore the shield. Chris Evans has never been shy about weighing in on the franchise that made him a household name, even years after stepping away from his most iconic role.

That kind of fan-favorite moment played out again this past weekend, giving longtime followers of the Avengers something new to chew on. With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ generating fresh buzz ahead of its December release, the timing couldn’t have been better for Evans to reflect on the franchise’s roster.

During a live panel at Fan Expo Boston on Sunday, August 9, a fan asked Evans a simple but loaded question: if he had to build an Ultimate Avengers team using four MCU superheroes, who would make the cut? Without missing a beat, Evans built out his dream squad on the spot, starting with Scarlet Witch, adding Thor, and rounding things out with Iron Man and Winter Soldier.

Evans didn’t just rattle off names, either. He walked through his reasoning for each choice, joking about how the answer depends on what exactly the team is being assembled to do. “I guess you’d be a fool not to start with Scarlet Witch just based on the power,” he said during the panel, before adding Thor to guarantee the team would win.

His third pick, Iron Man, came with an even more playful justification tied to what happens after the fighting is over. “And then probably Iron Man, because after you win, he knows all the good vacation spots,” Evans said, keeping the tone light throughout his answer.

Once Captain America was confirmed as part of the lineup by default, Evans was left with one final slot to fill, and he landed on Bucky Barnes, the Winter Soldier. It’s a pick that makes sense given the real-life friendship and on-screen history between Evans and Sebastian Stan, though some fans might have expected a flashier name for that last spot.

Since the question was inherently subjective, Evans’ answer is bound to spark debate among fans who might build their own dream teams differently depending on the criteria. Scarlet Witch and Thor are fairly safe picks given their raw power levels, but the Iron Man and Winter Soldier choices lean more toward personality and loyalty than pure combat utility.

This moment arrives at an interesting point in Evans’ relationship with the franchise. He’s set to return for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ on December 18, though notably not reprising his original role as Captain America, marking a different kind of comeback for both him and Robert Downey Jr., who is also returning to the franchise in a new capacity.

Fan Expo panels have increasingly become a reliable source for these kinds of candid, off-the-cuff Marvel moments, giving fans direct access to actors’ genuine thoughts outside of scripted press events. Evans, in particular, has built a reputation for being unfiltered and engaged during these convention appearances, which only adds to the appeal for die-hard fans in attendance.

Whether or not this exact lineup would work in an actual MCU battle is beside the point. It’s the kind of playful, off-the-cuff moment that reminds fans why they fell in love with these characters in the first place.

If you could build your own Ultimate Avengers team, who would you pick?
