Chris Evans Reveals the Secret Codename Marvel Used to Hide His Return as Steve Rogers in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

Marvel Studios has built an entire playbook around secrecy, and few productions have tested that system quite like ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’ From decoy scripts to elaborate set codenames, the studio has spent the better part of two years trying to keep its sprawling, multiverse-spanning cast under wraps.

Chris Evans’ potential involvement became one of the most persistent rumors surrounding the project. The actor spent months publicly denying any connection to the film, even as leaks and set reports continued to swirl around a mysterious 1960s-era house built for the production.

Now Evans has confirmed what fans long suspected, revealing the elaborate lengths Marvel went to in order to protect his comeback as Steve Rogers. Speaking during a Q&A at Fan Expo Boston this past weekend, the actor confirmed that his character was disguised under a decoy identity throughout the entire production.

“Within the script, my character was called Luke Cage just in case things leaked,” Evans shared during the panel. “On the call sheets, I was called Luke Cage. Even on set, they’d say, ‘Luke Cage is travelling.’ It was such a locked-down thing.”

The reveal lines up with earlier set reports that pointed to signage referencing ‘Luke Cage’s House’ near the period-accurate property built in Windsor Great Park. That detail had puzzled fans for months, since the character has no known connection to the plot of ‘Avengers: Doomsday.’ With Evans’ confirmation, it now appears the codename was simply a smokescreen tied to Steve Rogers rather than an actual tease of Mike Colter’s Marvel character.

The house itself has fueled plenty of speculation, especially given how ‘Avengers: Endgame’ left things for Rogers. After returning the Infinity Stones, Steve chose to live out a full life in the past alongside Peggy Carter before eventually passing the shield to Sam Wilson. A period-appropriate house tucked away from prying eyes fits neatly into that storyline, even if Marvel has yet to confirm exactly how Rogers factors into the new film.

Evans also used the appearance to tease what audiences can expect from his character’s arc, hinting that directors Joe and Anthony Russo were not going easy on him this time around. “The Russos love beating up Steve Rogers,” Evans said. “Their favourite thing to do is to just beat the crap out of him. To them, that’s what makes a hero, and that’s someone who gets punched so many times but still gets up.”

He continued, teasing a particularly rough ride for the character in the upcoming film. “So they keep finding new ways to kick his butt, but this one was brutal, and a really good examination into his nature and his values.”

Beyond the codename reveal, Evans hinted at renewed on-screen chemistry with Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes, a pairing that has anchored some of the MCU’s most beloved moments since ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier.’ Asked about filming together again, Evans seemed to catch himself before revealing too much.

“We really love working together so much, and I guess I can’t give too much away,” he said, before adding, “this is so tricky. I was about to start really talking. You almost got me.”

The comment has already sparked a wave of excitement among fans eager to see the two share the screen again after years of speculation about Evans’ Marvel future. Between the codename confirmation and the hints of a Bucky reunion, Fan Expo Boston delivered exactly the kind of drip-feed reveal Marvel has become known for.
