Chris Evans has spoken about why he decided to return to the Marvel universe for Avengers: Doomsday, after previously stepping away from the role of Steve Rogers. The actor made it clear that his comeback was not a casual decision and was driven by the story itself.

Speaking at CinemaCon 2026, Evans addressed months of speculation about whether he would return. He explained that he only agreed to come back when he felt the role had real purpose in the film. According to him, the decision was based entirely on the story’s needs rather than nostalgia or fan pressure. He said, “I said I would only come back if there was a real reason, and in Doomsday, there’s a very real reason why these heroes need Steve Rogers.”

The event included appearances from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and directors Anthony and Joe Russo. Robert Downey Jr. was also part of the presentation, confirmed to be playing Doctor Doom in the new film. Evans reacted to the casting news with a light comment, saying, “I don’t like him.” Early footage shown at the event reportedly hinted at Steve Rogers reuniting with Thor, suggesting major team interactions in the story.

Evans had previously insisted he was done with the role. In earlier interviews, he described himself as “happily retired” and dismissed ongoing rumors about a return. Despite that, speculation continued until Marvel officially confirmed his involvement.

Avengers: Doomsday is expected to be a major crossover film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The story is set to bring together multiple groups of characters, including the Avengers, Fantastic Four, and X-Men from earlier film universes. Reports also suggest the film may explore Steve Rogers’ personal life, including his relationship with Peggy Carter and their son, with Hayley Atwell expected to return.

The film is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and continues the larger multiverse storyline that has been building in recent Marvel projects. It has gone through several changes during development before taking its current form.

Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to release on December 18.

Evans returning only when the story “needed” him makes the decision feel more meaningful than a simple comeback for fans. It also raises expectations for how Steve Rogers will be used in the plot.
