Christopher Nolan Fans are Going to Extreme Lengths to See ‘The Odyssey’ in 70mm IMAX
Christopher Nolan has always believed that movies are meant to be experienced on the biggest screens possible, and fans are proving they feel the same way. With ‘The Odyssey’ becoming one of the most anticipated releases of the year, moviegoers are traveling across states, buying tickets months early, and making major plans just to see the film in 70mm IMAX.
The demand has become so intense that some fans are treating the theatrical experience almost like a special event rather than a normal trip to the movies. Nolan filmed the entire movie using IMAX cameras, making it the first feature to be shot completely in that format. Because only a small number of theaters can show the film in true 70mm IMAX, fans are going out of their way to find those locations.
One of those fans is Amber Connaghan, a 29-year-old technology editor who lives in the California desert. According to Variety, Connaghan bought her ticket more than a year before release and is preparing for a three-hour drive to reach the nearest theater showing ‘The Odyssey’ in IMAX 70mm.
She even joked that the movie affected her personal plans. “One of my friends got pregnant last year, and she’s like, ‘OK, it’s time for you to have your second child,’” Connaghan said. “I was like, ‘No, I have to wait a few months. Otherwise, it’s going to be too close to ‘The Odyssey.’”
Connaghan is far from alone. Fans around the world have been racing to secure seats for the rare IMAX 70mm screenings, with some locations selling out quickly after tickets became available. Since many IMAX theaters do not have the equipment needed to show 70mm film, some viewers are traveling long distances or booking unusual showtimes just to experience Nolan’s latest film in its intended format.
Hogan Shay, a 27-year-old software advisor from Dallas, told Variety that he plans to watch the movie twice in IMAX 70mm within two weeks. “This is the biggest movie of the year from the biggest director of our lifetime,” Shay said. “We grew up with Nolan’s work. He’s a household name for my generation like Spielberg or Scorsese were for my parents.”
Some fans are taking their commitment even further. Tim McHugh, a 33-year-old healthcare consultant from Pittsburgh, is flying to Los Angeles to see the movie at Universal CityWalk’s IMAX 70mm theater. McHugh said seeing a film in this format has been a personal goal for years after learning more about the process behind large-format screenings.
How far would you go to watch Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ in 70mm IMAX?
“So much of my after-school life was spent lacing projectors that I fell in love with movies,” McHugh explained. “You feel connected to the medium when you’re putting your hands on film like that.”
The rush for tickets has also created some chaotic moments. Variety reported that when additional tickets went on sale, many fans dealt with website crashes and long waits. Conrad Rothbaum, a filmmaker from Los Angeles, described the experience as stressful while trying to get seats with friends.
“It was harrowing,” Rothbaum said. “I was on a text chain with friends, and we were all trying to get tickets at the same time.”
For longtime Nolan fans, the excitement is about more than just watching a new movie. Many see ‘The Odyssey’ as another example of the director protecting the traditional theater experience in a changing industry. From ‘The Dark Knight’ to ‘Dunkirk’ and ‘Oppenheimer,’ Nolan has consistently encouraged audiences to experience his films on premium screens.
Some fans are even planning multiple visits. Simon James, a New York attorney, bought 18 IMAX 70mm tickets for the film’s first few weeks of release at AMC Lincoln Square.
“Chris Nolan is my favorite director, and I am a big appreciator of his films,” James told Variety. “I really believe him when he says that the best way to see a Chris Nolan film is in an IMAX theater.”
With ‘The Odyssey’ arriving in theaters, the massive effort from fans shows that Nolan has created something beyond a simple movie release. For many viewers, seeing the film in IMAX 70mm has become part of the experience itself.
