Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ Drops Its Epic Final Trailer
The final trailer for Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has officially been released, giving fans another look at one of the most anticipated movies of the year.
The Odyssey is written and directed by Christopher Nolan and is based on Homer’s famous ancient Greek poem of the same name. The movie follows the story of Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, as he struggles to return home after the Trojan War. During his journey, he faces dangerous creatures, powerful gods, and many life-threatening challenges while trying to reunite with his wife, Penelope.
Matt Damon leads the cast as Odysseus, while Anne Hathaway plays Penelope. The film also features Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron in major roles. Nolan is producing the movie alongside his wife, Emma Thomas, through their production company, Syncopy.
According to production information, Nolan began writing the screenplay in March 2024. By October of that year, Universal Pictures had secured the project, and the movie was officially announced in December. Casting continued through late 2024 and into early 2025 before Matt Damon was confirmed as the lead actor in February 2025.
For this adaptation, Nolan carefully studied several translations of Homer’s original work. Rather than creating a modern version of the story, he aimed for a more realistic take on Greek mythology. Reports say he drew inspiration from classic films including Andrei Rublev and Ran, along with the visual effects work of legendary filmmaker Ray Harryhausen.
Filming took place across several countries between February and August 2025. The production traveled to Morocco, Greece, Italy, Scotland, Iceland, Western Sahara, and Malta. Some scenes were also shot at the Universal Studios lot in Los Angeles. The large-scale production allowed the filmmakers to capture a wide variety of landscapes that match the story’s long journey across land and sea.
The movie reportedly has a budget of around $250 million, making it one of the biggest productions of Christopher Nolan’s career. It also marks the first feature film to be shot entirely using IMAX’s 70 mm film cameras. The use of this technology is expected to give audiences a more detailed and immersive experience, especially on large-format screens.
Before its release, the film has already generated plenty of discussion online. According to reports, fans and critics have debated the movie’s costume design, production design, accents, dialogue, and casting choices. Many of the conversations have focused on how closely the film matches the historical period and Homer’s original story.
The newly released final trailer gives viewers another look at the film’s large-scale action, stunning locations, and mythical creatures, including the Cyclops Polyphemus, the Sirens, and the nymph Calypso. It also highlights Odysseus’ determination to make it back to Ithaca after years away from home.
The Odyssey will premiere in London on July 6, 2026, before opening in theaters across the United States and the United Kingdom on July 17 through Universal Pictures. The film will also be released in IMAX and other premium large-format theaters, giving audiences the chance to experience Nolan’s latest epic on the biggest screens possible.
