Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ Has Officially Left the MCU’s Box Office in the Dust

Christopher Nolan has spent more than two decades proving that ambitious, star-driven filmmaking can still pack theaters, but even by his own standards, this summer has been something else entirely. His latest release has spent weeks defying typical blockbuster trends, holding onto audiences with a staying power that few modern tentpoles manage to replicate.

That film is ‘The Odyssey‘, Nolan’s sprawling, nearly three-hour adaptation of Homer’s ancient epic, led by Matt Damon as Odysseus alongside a stacked ensemble that includes Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Tom Holland, Lupita Nyong’o and Robert Pattinson. Shot entirely on IMAX film cameras and carrying an R rating, it seemed like an unconventional bet for a summer tentpole, yet it has consistently outperformed expectations since its July 17 debut.

That momentum has now pushed the film past one of its most symbolically loaded milestones yet. According to Box Office Mojo data, ‘The Odyssey’ has surpassed 2012’s ‘The Avengers’ at the worldwide box office, with Nolan’s epic climbing to $1.553 billion globally against ‘The Avengers” lifetime total of $1.521 billion. That places ‘The Odyssey’ as the fourteenth-highest-grossing film of all time worldwide, and specifically knocks off a movie that ranks as the seventh highest-grossing entry in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe.

It’s a genuinely rare feat for a non-franchise, adult-skewing film to outpace one of the MCU’s foundational blockbusters, especially one that essentially launched the modern shared-universe model Hollywood has chased ever since. ‘The Odyssey’ earned $564 million domestically and $989 million internationally to get there, opening to $264.1 million worldwide, the biggest global opening of Nolan’s career and a mark that surpassed his own previous record set by ‘The Dark Knight Rises’.

That MCU scalp adds to a string of milestones the film has already racked up this summer. ‘The Odyssey’ recently overtook Marvel’s ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ to become the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time worldwide, and it’s now officially Nolan’s highest-grossing release ever, surpassing both ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ and ‘The Dark Knight’. With more than $7 billion in career grosses across his filmography, Nolan has firmly cemented himself as one of the most bankable filmmakers of his generation.

IMAX has played a significant role in that success, contributing hundreds of millions in ticket sales and making ‘The Odyssey’ the format’s highest-grossing release ever, a distinction tied directly to its status as the first narrative feature shot entirely on IMAX film cameras. With 70mm IMAX screenings continuing to sell out in major markets well into the fall, the film’s box office climb shows little sign of slowing down.

Given how many MCU releases ‘The Odyssey’ has already passed on the all-time charts, and with strong legs still carrying it through additional international rollouts, it’s likely to keep climbing past even more Marvel benchmarks before its theatrical run finally winds down. For a three-hour R-rated adaptation of a nearly 3,000-year-old poem, that’s an almost unthinkable box office outcome.
