Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ Just Pulled Off a Box Office Streak Almost Nothing Else Ever Has

Box office longevity has become an increasingly rare quality in an industry where most blockbusters experience steep drop-offs after their opening weekend. Plenty of movies can post a massive debut, but very few manage to keep audiences coming back consistently for weeks, let alone months, after release.

Christopher Nolan’s latest epic has spent its entire theatrical run defying that pattern in dramatic fashion. Since opening July 17 with a $123.5 million domestic debut, ‘The Odyssey’ has methodically climbed through Nolan’s own filmography, first overtaking ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ and then ‘The Dark Knight’ to become his highest-grossing release of all time.

That momentum has now translated into a genuinely remarkable endurance record. The film added another $1.1 million at the domestic box office on Tuesday, extending its streak of consecutive days above the $1 million mark to 61, meaning ‘The Odyssey’ has now gone two full months without a single day falling below that threshold.

That milestone puts ‘The Odyssey’ in genuinely rare territory. The 61-day streak now ties 1999’s ‘Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace’ for the fifth-longest run of consecutive $1 million days ever recorded domestically. Should the film clear the bar again, it would move into the top four, trailing only a handful of the biggest box office juggernauts of all time, including ‘Avatar.’

Along the way, ‘The Odyssey’ had already passed ‘Finding Nemo’s’ 59-day streak to claim the sixth-longest run overall, and it holds the outright record for any R-rated release, having surpassed ‘Obsession’s’ previous mark of 55 consecutive days. It had also cleared ‘Barbie’s’ 46-day streak earlier in its run, becoming the sixth-longest such streak recorded at the domestic box office since the pandemic began.

The Matt Damon-led adaptation of Homer’s epic poem leaned heavily on IMAX support from the start, becoming only the second film in IMAX history to cross $100 million in that format within just 10 days, trailing only ‘Avengers: Endgame.’ That format strength appears to be paying continued dividends, since the film is currently outperforming even ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ in domestic daily grosses, remaining the number 2 film at the box office behind the record-breaking Sony release.

On its most recent Tuesday discount day, ‘The Odyssey’ collected $1.1 million, marking the fifth-biggest ninth Tuesday performance ever recorded and dropping just 31.2 percent from the previous week, a remarkably soft decline for a film nine weeks into its run. That consistency has pushed the film’s total domestic gross to $602.9 million.

With Nolan’s filmography collectively pushing past $7 billion worldwide, ‘The Odyssey’ has cemented itself as a defining entry in that catalog. Projections had previously placed the film’s likely final domestic total somewhere between $615 million and $630 million, though its continued daily consistency suggests that range could climb even higher before its theatrical run finally winds down.

Whether it can string together enough additional days to crack the top four all-time streaks remains to be seen, but the fact that it’s even in that conversation says plenty about the kind of run this has been. For a nearly three-hour, R-rated epic to still be pulling in over $1 million daily two months after release is virtually unheard of in the modern box office landscape.

Whatever the final domestic number ends up being, ‘The Odyssey’ has already secured its place as one of the most durable box office runs of the year, R-rated or otherwise. The film crossed the $1 billion global mark in just three weeks and continues to demonstrate that Nolan’s reputation as a filmmaker whose movies are designed to be seen in theaters still carries enormous weight with audiences.
