Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ Popcorn Bucket Revealed — Fans Are Already Talking About It
IMAX has revealed a special collectible popcorn bucket for Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film The Odyssey, and it is already drawing attention from fans. The design is modeled after the IMAX MSM 9802 Keighley film camera, linking the collectible directly to the movie’s large-format production style.
The reveal came alongside the start of ticket sales, announced through IMAX’s official Instagram account. The post described the film with the message, “Ithaca’s King is coming back. Tickets to #TheOdysseyMovie in IMAX are on sale now. Link in bio. #ShotEntirelyWithIMAXFilmCameras.” The campaign highlights the movie’s full use of IMAX 70mm cameras, a major part of its production identity.
IMAX also released short promotional clips featuring Matt Damon and Anne Hathaway, both of whom play central roles in the film. These promos continue the early marketing push ahead of the movie’s global theatrical release.
The Odyssey is written and directed by Christopher Nolan and is based on Homer’s ancient Greek epic of the same name. The story follows Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, played by Matt Damon, as he struggles to return home after the Trojan War. Along the way, he faces dangerous mythological beings and impossible challenges while trying to reunite with his wife Penelope, played by Anne Hathaway.
The film has a large ensemble cast that includes Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron. Nolan is producing the film with Emma Thomas through their company Syncopy.
According to production details shared by the studio, Nolan began writing the film in March 2024 and secured backing from Universal Pictures later that year. Casting continued into early 2025, with Damon confirmed as the lead in February. The project was officially announced in December 2024.
Nolan aimed for a grounded interpretation of Greek mythology, drawing inspiration from Emily Wilson’s modern translation of The Odyssey as well as classic visual storytelling from filmmaker Ray Harryhausen. Filming took place across multiple countries including Morocco, Greece, Italy, Scotland, Iceland, Western Sahara, and Malta, along with studio work in Los Angeles.
With an estimated budget of around 250 million dollars, The Odyssey is reported to be Nolan’s most expensive film so far and his first project shot entirely using IMAX 70mm cameras.
The film is scheduled for theatrical release in the United States on July 17, and will be released in IMAX theaters worldwide by Universal Pictures.
With the new popcorn bucket reveal, IMAX is continuing to build anticipation for what is already being positioned as one of the biggest cinematic releases of 2026.
