Classic Movie Gets Small Screen Spinoff as New Series Adaptation in the Works

‘One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest’ is set to inspire a new TV series, focusing on a fresh perspective from one of its most memorable characters. Paul Zaentz, producer and nephew of the original film’s producer, Saul Zaentz, revealed on the indie filmmaking podcast CK Café that they have secured the rights to develop a series based on the story, told through the eyes of Chief Bromden.

“Just now, I’ve signed an agreement with Ken Kesey’s widow to develop a TV series which we’ll make through the point of view of the Chief for the first season,” Zaentz said. “Following the first season, we’ll see what happens to the Chief after he escapes.”

This is especially interesting because the author of the original book, Ken Kesey, was not a fan of the 1975 film adaptation directed by Milos Forman.

Kesey’s novel was told from Chief Bromden’s point of view, a detail the movie changed. In the film, the Chief, played by Will Sampson, was a towering half-Native American patient who pretended to be deaf and mute. Over time, the main character encourages him to break free from his silence, making the Chief a symbol of strength and resistance.

Right now, there are no details about who will write the new series or which studio will produce it, as the information was first revealed on the podcast.

The original story revolves around a rebellious man sent to a psychiatric hospital in 1963 Oregon. In the movie, Jack Nicholson played the lead, who inspires other patients to stand up against a strict head nurse. The Chief’s role in the story is powerful and central, which makes this new series angle exciting.

Michael Douglas mentioned earlier that there has always been interest in remakes or spinoffs of this story. However, Zaentz has preferred to keep things quiet until now. The only official TV spinoff so far was Netflix’s 2020 series Ratched, a prequel that lasted one season and was produced by Zaentz.

Zaentz also shared that Fathom Entertainment will be re-releasing a 4K restored version of the original film this month in over 1,000 U.S. theaters to celebrate its 50th anniversary.

He expressed some doubts about remaking classic films, saying, “don’t remake Psycho,” but feels that TV series offer more room for developing characters. Still, he thinks some recent TV adaptations haven’t lived up to their film originals, mentioning Netflix’s versions of The Mosquito Coast and The Talented Mr. Ripley.

In 2023, Paul Zaentz’s company, Teatro della Pace Films, acquired the film library of the Saul Zaentz Company, which includes famous titles like the original movie, The English Patient, and Amadeus.

Paul Zaentz has worked closely with his uncle Saul on many projects, including Amadeus, The Mosquito Coast, and The English Patient, among others.

This new series, told through the Chief’s perspective, could offer fans a deeper look at a classic story from a unique and important viewpoint.
