Commander Shepard Actor Tells Fans to ‘Hold the Line’ as the ‘Save Mass Effect’ Petition Soars
Few video game communities rally like the fans of ‘Mass Effect.’ For years they have defended Commander Shepard’s story, argued over endings and kept the series alive through every setback. Now, after one of the biggest shocks in the genre’s history, they are organizing again.
The spark was BioWare’s sudden closure. On October 21, EA shut down the studio behind ‘Baldur’s Gate,’ ‘Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic,’ ‘Dragon Age’ and ‘Mass Effect,’ ending a run of 31 years. The company-wide cuts affect around 400 jobs, with roughly 50 of them tied to the canceled ‘Mass Effect’ game.
Fans responded almost immediately. A petition to ‘Save Mass Effect’ has now crossed 200,000 signatures, and Mark Meer, the voice of male Commander Shepard, has encouraged fans to hold the line.
The #SaveMassEffect campaign went up on Change.org on October 21, the same day as the closure. It quickly passed its original goal of 30,000 signatures and reached more than 52,000 by October 23. By the next day, it had topped 100,000, and by October 25 it was nearing 180,000 before breaking 200,000.
The latest count stands at more than 207,000 signatures. For a petition started by one fan, Joe Smith, that is a remarkable pace.
Notably, the petition does not call on EA to reopen BioWare. Instead, it urges EA to commit to the continued development of ‘Mass Effect’ with proper funding, adequate staffing and enough time to maintain the franchise’s high standards. If EA won’t do that, it suggests licensing the IP to another studio that shares the passion and vision to keep it alive.
The text argues that the series holds a special place in the hearts of millions of players worldwide. Many signers say the games helped them through hard periods in their lives, while others criticize EA’s focus on live-service games and microtransactions.
The most visible boost came from the franchise’s leads. Jennifer Hale, who voices female Shepard, said she wants to imagine a future where fans, a studio and investors could work together to bring ‘Mass Effect’ back. Meer then reacted with a video of his own and encouraged fans to “hold the line” and sign the petition.
He also highlighted the impact of the closure on Edmonton, where the studio was based, and on the wider industry. The phrase, a familiar rallying cry from the games, has since become a hashtag for the campaign.
The canceled project appears to have been called ‘Mass Effect: Universe,’ based on a leaked trailer. One former council member who gave feedback during development said it was set more than 600 years after the Reaper War. According to that account, players would have taken on a customizable N7 spy in a galactic Cold War, with humanity allied to the krogan and batarians, ties to ‘Andromeda’ and a returning Liara as a powerful matriarch.
Those details remain unconfirmed, and it is still unclear exactly what stage of development the game had reached. The leaks have, however, deepened the sense of loss among fans.
Realistically, petitions rarely change corporate decisions. One outlet noted that EA is not beholden to a digital petition, and that it is hard to imagine the company doing a 180 on this. Another report suggested that EA could sell off ‘Mass Effect’ and other IPs to recoup costs, although analysts disagree.
There is a strange wrinkle. While the next game has been canceled, the ‘Mass Effect’ TV series at Prime Video is still going ahead, and it has drawn support from its showrunner for the campaign. Should the show become a hit, there would be no new games to go with it.
Even so, the numbers make a statement. Over 200,000 people signing in less than a week shows how much affection remains for the series, and how strongly fans feel about what comes next. It’s the sort of momentum that can keep a franchise in the conversation, even if the outcome is out of their hands.
For now, the message from Shepard’s voice is simple: keep making noise.
What should EA do with the Mass Effect franchise next?
