Did You Know? Connor Hawke is the son of Oliver Queen

A Little History

Created by Kelley Puckett and Jim Aparo, Connor Hawke first appeared inside the pages of Green Arrow Volume 2, back in October of 1994.

Connor Hawke is the child of Oliver Queen and Sandra Hawke. As the son of both and having a very mixed background, Connor spent his childhood being bullied and picked on by his classmates. This, coupled with his extremely quick temper, caused his mother to be concerned for him.

Although he didn’t have contact with him, Connor grew up aware of who his famous father was. Due to this, Connor often kept newspaper clippings and articles about his father’s exploits.

Because Connor had trouble in school, his mother signed papers that would allow him to attend the same Monastery that his father attended. It was her hope that by following in his father’s footsteps, he would learn control over his temper. More than control, she hoped that he would begin to use his natural gifts for the betterment of humankind.

Master Jansen, the same Monk who turned Oliver’s life around, raised Connor over the course of the next 5 years. Under Jansen, Connor changed his life and became a student of Zen Buddhism, a master of Kyudo Archery, and a master of Aikido. No matter his training, however, Connor still had a strong desire to replicate his father’s endeavors.

While Connor was learning a new way of life, Oliver was experiencing a relapse of sorts. After Black Canary had left him and he had left Seattle, Oliver checked himself into the Ashram Monastery. While he returned to the Monastery to find inner peace, he couldn’t possibly have predicted who he would find.

During the first many months together, Oliver wasn’t aware that Connor was his son. As a result, he took Connor under his wing and taught him everything that he considered pertinent to becoming a hero. The two became extremely close that when an assassin came to the Monastery to kill Oliver, the two banded together to stop him. Oliver wanted to find out more about his assailant and when he left, Connor happily joined him.

Sometime after they left, a possessed Hal Jordan revealed to Oliver that Connor was, in fact, his son. This news sent shockwaves through Oliver. Instead of welcoming Connor in as his son, Oliver accused Connor of plotting against him. As such, the two separated on terrible terms…and would stay that way for many years.
