‘Criminal Minds: Evolution’ Boss Teases Sicarius’ Future and “Unfinished Business” in Season 19
Criminal Minds: Evolution returns for its 19th season with a darker story, a time jump, and a mix of new cases and long-running plotlines.
The show continues to follow the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) as they track dangerous criminals across the country, while also dealing with the personal lives of the team.
According to showrunner Erica Messer, the new season brings back unresolved storylines, especially involving Elias Voit, also known as Sicarius. Voit was once one of the most feared serial killers in the series, but after spending years in prison and suffering a serious head injury, his character takes a new direction. Instead of being only a threat, he now becomes involved in helping the BAU stop another killer who is copying his crimes.
This new criminal is called “The Fan,” and the storyline focuses on how Voit’s past actions continue to create consequences even after his arrest. Messer explained the idea behind returning to his story by saying, “I always felt like we had this unfinished business from Season 1 with Voit.” She added that the writers had long thought about the idea of other killers still being out there connected to his network.
The season takes place after a one-year time jump, which allows the show to explore how the characters have changed. Some members of the BAU are dealing with personal losses and new responsibilities, while still continuing their work on difficult cases. According to Messer, this gap in time helps the story feel more realistic, because life continues even when the team is off-screen.
Voit’s role in Season 19 is especially complicated. He is still considered dangerous, but he is also being used as a resource by the BAU to understand the mindset of the new copycat killer. His interactions with profiler Tara Lewis are part of an effort to document his thoughts and past behavior, while the rest of the team remains unsure if they can trust him.

The show also continues to balance its crime-of-the-week format with a larger season-long mystery. The hunt for “The Fan” becomes the main storyline that connects each episode, while smaller cases still give the BAU individual challenges.
Messer also noted that the series is focusing more on character development. She explained that viewers will see more of the emotional lives of the team, including how they cope with grief, family changes, and the pressure of their work. These personal stories run alongside the criminal investigations and help deepen the tone of the show.
Looking ahead, fans will not have to worry about the series ending anytime soon. The show has already been renewed for Season 20, meaning the story will continue beyond the current arc.
New episodes of Criminal Minds: Evolution are streaming weekly on Paramount+, with Season 19 continuing through July 23.
