‘Criminal Minds’ Showrunner Breaks Silence on Shocking Season 19 Premiere Death of Beloved Character
Season 19 of Criminal Minds: Evolution opened on a heartbreaking note, as a long-loved character was killed off in the premiere episode.
In the two-episode return on May 28, 2026, the BAU team is back on a new case, but one emotional storyline quickly takes over. Luke Alvez, played by Adam Rodriguez, is shown dealing with grief after the loss of his dog, Roxy. By the end of the premiere, viewers learn that Roxy has been put down, marking a deeply emotional moment for the character and fans who have followed his story for years.
Showrunner Erica Messer spoke about the decision and how difficult it was for the cast and crew. According to Us Weekly, she said, “I don’t think we can ever be prepared anytime anything has ever happened with a beloved character — whether they’re four-legged or not.” She added that pets are deeply personal for many viewers, saying, “It’s a loss of a family member.”
Messer explained that Roxy had been part of Luke’s story for a long time, especially for fans who have watched the series since earlier seasons. Because of that, the writers knew the storyline would hit hard. She said, “It was devastating for all of us to break that story. We all really felt the loss.”
The emotional weight of the episode also affected production. Messer revealed that she warned Adam Rodriguez ahead of time so he would be prepared for the storyline. She said the cast reacted strongly during filming, adding that there was “not a dry eye” during the table read and shooting process.
Adam Rodriguez also spoke about the impact of major story changes on the series. In past interviews with Us Weekly, he has reflected on how the show is not afraid to make bold choices with its characters. He noted that even difficult storylines can help actors deliver more emotional performances and allow characters like JJ and Luke to show deeper vulnerability.

Over the years, Criminal Minds has never shied away from major character exits or emotional deaths. The franchise has often used loss as a way to push character development forward, showing how the BAU team deals with grief while continuing their work on dangerous cases.
Rodriguez also previously commented on how the show handles these decisions behind the scenes. He explained that actors are usually given a heads-up before major changes happen, helping them prepare for emotional story arcs instead of being caught off guard.
Looking ahead, Messer said Season 19 is focused on “new beginnings,” even after such a painful start. She described the season as one that balances grief with hope, showing how the team continues to move forward while dealing with personal challenges.
New episodes of Criminal Minds: Evolution continue to stream weekly on Paramount+, with more emotional and high-stakes stories expected throughout the season.
