Cristin Milioti Confirms Sofia Falcone Won’t Appear in ‘The Batman: Part II,’ Despite Wanting to Return

Gotham’s biggest cinematic universe expansion in years came from an unexpected place, with ‘The Penguin’ turning a supporting Batman villain into one of the most acclaimed performances on television. That success has only made the character’s absence from the upcoming sequel sting a little more for fans hoping to see her story continue.

Cristin Milioti won a Primetime Emmy, a Critics’ Choice Award, and a Saturn Award for her portrayal of Sofia Falcone in HBO’s ‘The Penguin,’ a performance widely credited with transforming a relatively minor comic book figure into one of the franchise’s most compelling antagonists. That acclaim has fueled ongoing speculation about whether Sofia might eventually cross over into Matt Reeves’ film universe alongside Robert Pattinson’s Batman.

That crossover isn’t happening anytime soon. With ‘The Batman Part II’ now filming in Glasgow, Scotland, Milioti confirmed there’s no chance audiences will see her reprise the role in the sequel, addressing the question directly while promoting her new horror film ‘Buddy,’ which opens in theaters August 28.

“There’s not a chance you’ll see me in it, sadly,” Milioti said, adding, “But I wait. You know, I would go back to that world in a heartbeat.”

Her comments echo what director Matt Reeves himself revealed months earlier, when he confirmed at the 2025 Emmys that Sofia simply wouldn’t factor into the sequel’s story. Reeves explained that the film’s script was already far along in development by the time ‘The Penguin’ aired, meaning bringing Sofia into the mix risked disrupting a narrative direction the film had already committed to.

Despite the absence, Reeves made clear the door isn’t fully closed on Sofia’s future within Gotham’s cinematic side. He praised Milioti’s performance as astonishing and suggested there could be meaningful opportunities to work with the character again down the road, even if this particular sequel isn’t the venue for it.

Milioti has been consistently vocal about wanting to return to the role, previously telling reporters she would “love nothing more” than to bring Sofia back to the big screen and calling it her wildest dream to receive that call. She’s also expressed specific interest in sharing scenes with Zoë Kravitz’s Catwoman, given that Sofia and Selina Kyle share a complicated half-sister relationship established within the films.

That relationship, along with a callback to Selina in ‘The Penguin’s’ finale, has kept speculation alive that Sofia’s story isn’t truly finished, even without an appearance in the upcoming sequel. Colin Farrell is expected to return as Oswald Cobblepot for a handful of scenes in ‘The Batman Part II,’ though notably Kravitz’s Catwoman isn’t slated to appear in the film at all either.

With ‘The Penguin’ still without an official Season 2 announcement and ‘The Batman Part II’ currently eyeing a 2027 release, Sofia Falcone’s next chapter remains genuinely uncertain. For now, fans will have to hold onto the hope that Reeves’ comments about revisiting the character someday eventually pay off.
