Cyclops’ Full Comic-Accurate ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Suit Just Debuted at SDCC, and James Marsden Already Told Us About Its One Flaw

James Marsden has been waiting a long time to give Cyclops the costume fans always wanted, and San Diego Comic Con just gave the public its clearest look yet. Twenty-six years after debuting the character in a tight black leather suit that barely let him move, Marsden is finally stepping into something that actually resembles the comics.

That transformation has been building steadily through the marketing rollout for ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ with glimpses of the new costume trickling out through trailers and leaked concept art over the past several months. This week’s convention reveal marked the most complete look at the finished suit fans have gotten so far.

Cyclops’ full suit from ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ was put on display at the Marvel booth during San Diego Comic Con, giving fans an up-close look at the character’s comic-accurate blue and yellow costume, complete with a metallic visor and utility belt. The mannequin display gave attendees their clearest view yet of the finished design, well beyond what previous trailers have shown.

Marsden had already spoken candidly about the suit prior to this reveal, appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live to discuss the shift in costume design between his original X-Men films and this new MCU appearance. He explained that the first movies had the team dressed in black leather that was tight and restrictive, recalling an incident with co-star Hugh Jackman where the two actors tripped over a small retaining wall near the Statue of Liberty because their suits made it so difficult to move.

That restrictive history made the new costume feel like a genuine upgrade for the actor. Marsden told Jimmy Kimmel Live that wearing the new suit felt very cool and made him feel very proud, at least until he put on the visor.

According to Marsden, the visor itself turned out to be the one real drawback of an otherwise exciting costume change. He explained that he could not see through it properly, noting there are actually a few different visor variations, with one that lights up and another that allows for slightly better visibility.

Kimmel could not resist poking fun at the situation, joking that Marsden was at his most vulnerable while dressed as a superhero, a comparison the actor readily agreed with during the segment. That kind of self-deprecating honesty has become a hallmark of how Marsden has discussed his return to the role throughout the film’s promotional cycle.

The character’s comic-accurate redesign fits within a broader pattern Marvel has established for its returning X-Men actors. Hugh Jackman previously received a similar treatment, finally wearing Wolverine’s yellow and blue costume for the first time in 2024’s ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ after decades of appearing in more muted, film-friendly designs across the character’s history.

Marsden’s return marks his first appearance as Scott Summers since a brief cameo in 2014’s ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past,’ following his original run across the character’s earliest big-screen outings starting in 2000. He joins fellow returning cast members Patrick Stewart as Professor X and Ian McKellen as Magneto, both confirmed as part of the film’s massive ensemble.

With the SDCC display now giving fans their most detailed look yet at the finished costume, and Marvel’s Hall H panel still ahead this weekend, anticipation for more ‘Doomsday’ reveals continues building. Even with a visor that apparently leaves something to be desired, this comic-accurate suit represents exactly the kind of upgrade fans have wanted for Cyclops since his earliest cinematic appearances.
