Method dressing has become one of the most talked-about trends in modern press tours. Rather than simply picking pretty gowns, stars and their stylists build wardrobes that echo the story they’re promoting. For a Jane Austen adaptation, that means plenty of lace, corsetry and romance.

Daisy Edgar-Jones has leaned into that idea more than most. The 28-year-old has spent the past month promoting ‘Sense and Sensibility‘ on 3 continents, with stylist Dani Michelle dressing her for every stop from London to Los Angeles. Her plan was to thread each look back to her character, Elinor Dashwood, and the period itself.

That approach has now reached New York, where Edgar-Jones turned heads in a sheer archival Rodarte gown. The Daisy Edgar-Jones ‘Sense and Sensibility’ press look comes just ahead of the film’s US release this Friday. It’s a dreamy ensemble that fits the film’s romantic mood.

The dress is from Rodarte’s Spring/Summer 2017 collection. It’s a sheer lace midi with intricate gold and ivory embroidery, and a striking beaded heart motif on the bodice. White ruffled lace trims the neckline, while sheer mesh side panels and subtle metallic threading add depth.

Cape-like layers of translucent tulle drape over her shoulders and flow down her back. She paired the gown with gold Jude Mixer sandals and a romantic half-up hairstyle with soft waves and bangs. It’s a look that feels like a modern nod to Regency romance.

The Rodarte gown is just one of many standouts. Edgar-Jones kicked off the tour at the London premiere in a custom Vivienne Westwood dress made from champagne silk, with an asymmetrical hem, a corseted bodice and a gathered train. In Berlin, she wore a vintage Giorgio Armani Privé gown from spring 2005, paired with Boucheron jewelry.

For the Sydney premiere, she chose a sheer nude Miu Miu gown embroidered with silver sequins, worn over a loosely tied corset. It’s a nod to the Regency-era short stays rather than the waist-snatching Victorian look. At the Los Angeles premiere, she wore an archival 1999 Chloé look designed by Stella McCartney, in lavender to honor Elinor’s costumes.

She also changed into a corseted micro-mini-dress by Dilara Findikoglu for the after-party. In New York alone, she wore 6 looks, from Chloé and Rodarte to a Burberry trench with jeans. The variety shows that the theme can stay flexible without losing its romance.

‘Sense and Sensibility’ is directed by Georgia Oakley, who made her feature debut with ‘Blue Jean’, from a screenplay by novelist Diana Reid. Edgar-Jones plays the sensible Elinor, with Esmé Creed-Miles as her passionate sister Marianne. Caitríona Balfe, George MacKay, Frank Dillane, Herbert Nordrum, Bodhi Rae Breathnach and Fiona Shaw round out the cast.

The film is produced by Working Title, the studio behind other Austen adaptations like the 2005 ‘Pride & Prejudice’ and 2020’s ‘Emma’. It’s described as the 8th screen version of the 1811 novel. The best-known previous adaptation is Ang Lee’s Oscar-winning 1995 film starring Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet and Hugh Grant.

Critics have been warm, if not unanimous. One review called it a fine if not strictly necessary Austen redo, with Edgar-Jones and MacKay as standouts. Another gave it a B+, praising its unfussy approach and singling out Creed-Miles as a breakout.

Whether it can step out of Lee’s shadow is the big question. But with a lavish press tour and a cast that clearly understands the material, the film has built real momentum. Edgar-Jones’ wardrobe has certainly done its part to keep Austen in the conversation.
