Dakota & Elle Fanning’s ‘Nightingale’ Set Fight Revealed: What Really Happened?

Sisters who work together don’t always get along perfectly, and for two of Hollywood’s most recognizable sibling actresses, that reality finally caught up with them after decades of carefully avoiding it. Dakota and Elle Fanning have spent years being asked when they’d finally share the screen together, a question that followed them through separate, celebrated careers that somehow never quite overlapped.

That wait officially ended with ‘The Nightingale,’ the upcoming adaptation of Kristin Hannah’s bestselling World War II novel, which marks the first project where the sisters actually act opposite one another rather than simply playing the same character at different ages. Both actresses have described feeling a mix of excitement and nerves heading into the shoot, given how well they know each other and how much history came with finally working together on camera.

Now, ahead of the film’s release, Dakota Fanning has revealed that the two nearly made it through the entire production without a single sisterly clash, until one did finally happen. Appearing on ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,’ Dakota opened up about the first and only real fight she and Elle had while filming, and the crew reportedly couldn’t stop laughing once it happened.

According to Dakota, the disagreement broke out near the end of production during a scene the two were filming together in an uncomfortably hot room. She described sitting on a couch with Elle and asking her to move her leg, only for Elle to insist it had been there the entire day, prompting Dakota to snap back that she was too hot and didn’t want her sister sweating on her.

Dakota explained that the exchange escalated briefly before she told Elle to simply stop talking, capping off what she called their only quote-unquote fight of the entire shoot. She noted that the crew found the whole moment hilarious precisely because the sisters had managed to keep things so composed and professional up until that point.

That near-miss wasn’t entirely surprising given how open both sisters have been about feeling nervous heading into their first proper collaboration. Dakota has previously admitted the two were both silently panicked about acting opposite each other, explaining that working with the person who knows you best in the world carries its own unique pressure, even between two performers as experienced as the Fannings.

The two also reportedly set some lighthearted ground rules ahead of filming, with Elle joking on a red carpet appearance that Dakota had promised not to boss her around during production, a comment Dakota met with a laughing quip that Elle simply shouldn’t annoy her too much.

‘The Nightingale’ tells the story of two sisters navigating separate, dangerous paths in German-occupied France during World War II, with Dakota playing Vianne and Elle playing Isabelle. Directed by Michael Morris, the film is currently set for release on March 19, positioned to counterprogram against ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 4’ in theaters.

Both sisters have described the project as a long-awaited opportunity to finally combine their artistry on screen, having previously only portrayed the same character at different life stages rather than genuinely acting together. Given how much anticipation has built around their pairing, one brief spat over a hot room and an unmovable leg seems like a fairly gentle price to pay for finally getting there.
