Dave Filoni Finally Lays Out His Master Plan for the Future of Star Wars
Star Wars fans have spent the better part of this year wondering exactly what direction the franchise is heading, especially after a major leadership shakeup at Lucasfilm earlier in 2026. With new voices now steering the ship, every public comment from those in charge has been picked apart for clues about what comes next.
That scrutiny reached a new level this past weekend at D23, where Lucasfilm’s leadership finally offered some clarity on the philosophy guiding the franchise’s future. The comments came during a wide-ranging conversation that brought together some of Disney’s most influential storytellers to discuss how the company turns its biggest franchises into real-world experiences.
Dave Filoni explained his strategy for the future of Star Wars during the Disney Worldbuilders panel at D23. Filoni laid out his thinking directly: “We have several different generations of Star Wars fans, right? There’s original trilogy fans, prequel fans, sequel trilogy fans, Clone Wars fans, expanded universe fans. They all have different interests. And I always look at how we’re going to serve all these different interests. And most importantly, how do we bring them all together because they have this common love of Star Wars.”
The panel itself served as the world premiere for Leslie Iwerks’ new documentary “Disney Worldbuilders,” which examines how major franchises get translated into physical park experiences. Filoni appeared alongside Pixar’s Pete Docter, “Mandalorian and Grogu” director Jon Favreau, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, and Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Jared Bush, with the documentary itself premiering on Disney+ this past Thursday.
Filoni’s comments arrive at a particularly sensitive moment for the franchise’s fanbase, given how divisive discussions around different Star Wars eras have become online. His remarks quickly stirred debate among fans, some of whom pushed back on the framing that sequel trilogy fans exist as their own distinct group, a reaction that itself underscored the exact kind of fractured fan identity Filoni was describing.
This isn’t the first time Filoni has hinted at his broader vision since stepping into his leadership role earlier this year alongside ILM’s Lynwen Brennan. In a previous interview, he described his approach as having “an overarching idea” and building outward from there, rather than simply throwing projects at the wall to see what sticks, a notable shift in tone for a franchise that’s faced criticism for scattered storytelling in recent years.
The current Star Wars release slate already gives some shape to how that vision might play out. Following “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” Filoni is expected to return with Season 2 of “Ahsoka” in early 2027, followed by Shawn Levy’s “Starfighter” starring Ryan Gosling that same May. Beyond those, further specifics remain scarce, though Filoni has suggested some of what’s coming was already “in motion” before he took the reins.
Fans hoping for more concrete announcements may need to wait until Star Wars Celebration in April 2027, since Filoni has built a reputation for speaking in broad strokes rather than tipping his hand early. For now, his comments at D23 offer the clearest articulation yet of a guiding philosophy: less about picking favorites among eras, and more about finding the throughline that connects every generation of fans back to the same galaxy far, far away.
