Dave Filoni’s Untitled Star Wars Movie Gets a Fresh Description, and It Sounds Like the End of an Era

Star Wars fans have been waiting years for confirmation that Dave Filoni’s long-teased crossover movie is actually moving forward. Ever since Filoni took the stage at Star Wars Celebration back in 2023 to reveal his own theatrical project, the film has largely existed as a concept with almost no concrete updates on where things stood behind the scenes.

That silence made sense given how much else Lucasfilm had on its plate, from ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ hitting theaters earlier this year to the ongoing rollout of Disney+ series expanding the New Republic era. With so many moving pieces across the franchise, Filoni’s film seemed to be quietly waiting its turn in the queue.

Now there’s finally a fresh sign of life. A new description for Filoni’s untitled movie has surfaced through trade journal Production Weekly’s September issue, indicating the story will focus on the New Republic and will conclude the interconnected narratives told across ‘The Mandalorian,’ ‘The Book of Boba Fett,’ ‘Ahsoka’ and other Disney+ series.

That framing lines up with what Filoni has said about the project since it was first announced. The film has always been billed as the culmination of story threads spun out of the Mandoverse shows, tying together years of interconnected plotlines that began building back in ‘The Mandalorian’s’ earliest seasons.

Production Weekly’s listing wasn’t the only sign of movement, either. The same September issue also included Star Wars: New Jedi Order, the long-delayed Daisy Ridley sequel that has similarly spent years in development limbo, suggesting both films may finally be inching toward active pre-production after roughly three years of relative quiet.

For a project this connected to nearly a decade of storytelling, the timing of renewed momentum feels significant. Filoni’s film is expected to draw heavily on plot threads from the animated Star Wars shows as well, weaving together material that spans both the streaming and animated sides of the franchise.

Part of what makes this update notable is just how much influence Filoni now holds over these decisions. He became co-president of Lucasfilm in January of this year alongside Lynwen Brennan, stepping into that role after Kathleen Kennedy departed following more than 14 years running the studio.

That institutional authority puts Filoni in a position to shepherd both this film and the broader New Republic era storyline with a level of creative control he didn’t have when the project was first announced. Filoni has also spoken about how working on ‘Ahsoka’ Season 2 has helped clarify his thinking on where the film’s story ultimately needs to go, suggesting the two projects are developing in tandem rather than in isolation.

As for who the film’s central antagonist might be, all signs continue pointing toward Grand Admiral Thrawn. Filoni has previously described Thrawn as the definitive villain of this era of Star Wars storytelling, given the character’s growing presence across ‘Rebels,’ ‘The Mandalorian’ and ‘Ahsoka.’

With Production Weekly now flagging the project alongside New Jedi Order, fans have real reason to believe both films could see actual movement toward filming in the coming months. Neither project currently has a confirmed release date, and Lucasfilm has yet to formally comment on the new description or any production timeline.

Given how many interconnected storylines this film is expected to resolve, from Din Djarin’s journey to Ahsoka Tano’s ongoing search for Thrawn, expectations are understandably sky-high. Whether it can live up to years of buildup remains to be seen, but for the first time in a long while, this corner of the Star Wars universe finally looks like it’s moving forward.
