We already know that we won’t get any new Marvel projects from James Gunn following the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. However, since he’s the co-CEO of DC Studios now, we can expect a lot of DC content with his signature in the future. His DC Universe is set to officially kick off on the big screen with Superman Legacy in July 2025. Still, before that, we’ll get a chance to watch DC’s Creature Commandos, an upcoming animated series written by Gunn and set to premiere in 2024 on Max (HBOMax’s successor).

What is known about the upcoming series is that it will follow the homonymous team of superhumans as they’re fighting against the Axis powers during World War II. The series will consist of seven episodes, with James Gunn serving as the creator and writer. The series will feature an ensemble cast, including some actors who already have experience working with James Gunn. Maria Bakalova and Sean Gunn, who recently starred in Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 as Cosmo the Spacedog and Kraglin, are some of those actors.

Maria Bakalova starred as Cosmo the Superdog in Gunn’s The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, while Sean Gunn, James’ brother, starred as Kraglin Obfonteri in Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy and several other MCU projects. Gunn also starred as the Calendar Man and the Weasel in The Suicide Squad.

Maria Bakalova and Sean Gunn Open up about their DC roles

After their MCU and, in Sean’s case, DCEU experience, both of these actors will now work on the DCU project. Bakalova is set to voice Princess Ilana Rostovic, and Sean Gunn will appear in Creature Commandos in a dual role, reprising the role of Weasel and debuting as GI Robot. In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, both Bakalova, and Gunn opened up about their roles.

“I’m looking forward to start the process because it’s a completely different character than I’ve played before, even in feature films, just the type of a character that is written. It’s challenging, I think, but I’m dying to dive into it with James because I know he’s going to lead me to the best direction possible.”

“I don’t know how much I’m allowed to say about Creature Commandos, so I’m not going to say much. But I will say that, yeah, we’re going to get to learn a little more [about Weasel]. I’ve done a pretty good job by trusting James to know when’s a good time for us to work together on stuff and when not to, and he always comes to me at the right time when he knows that I’m the person for the job. So hopefully, he’ll continue to do that. I’m sure he will.”

Many directors are known for working with the same actors on different projects, and Gunn is certainly no different. There have been many talks that some of the MCU actors will join DCU, especially if they previously worked with Gunn.

DC’s Creature Commandos is also starring Indira Varma, Frank Grillo, Zoë Chao, David Harbour, Alan Tudyk, Steve Agee, and Viola Davis, who reprises the role of Amanda Waller from DCEU.

J. M. DeMatteis and Pat Broderick created the Creature Commandos team. The team first appeared in Weird War Tales #93 in November of 1980. This team is consisted of superhumans originally set in World War II, and the modern team was introduced in their own comic miniseries written by Tim Truman in 2000.

Written by James Gunn, the animated series Creature Commandos is set to premiere in 2024 on Max.
