Whether we like it or not, Warner Bros Discovery and DC Studios are seriously gearing up to start James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe, a new cinematic universe based on DC characters that will replace the DC Extended Universe. DCEU will be concluded at the end of this year with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, and judging by the studios’ decisions after the release of Shazam: Fury of the Gods, we’re not sure that either WBD or James Gunn care how these last few DCEU movies will perform at the box office.

Last February, James Gunn uncovered the first projects that DCU would spawn in this first Chapter, officially called Gods and Monsters. We can expect everything, from live-action movies and live-action TV shows to animated TV shows, and Gunn even teased that some upcoming video games will be incorporated into the franchise. One of the animated TV shows is The Creature Commandos, which will feature a homonymous team of military superheroes that fought against the Axis powers during World War II.

The Creature Commandos will be an animated mini-series developed for MAX, a rebranded streaming service that will replace HBOMax in May 2023. Recently we’ve learned which actors will have main voice roles in the series, and now James Gunn has confirmed that we’ll watch this series before the DCU movie Superman: Legacy releases in theaters.

Superman: Legacy, written and directed by Gunn, is set to be released in July 2025. That movie was announced as the first movie set in the DCU, but the franchise will kick off in 2024 because that’s when we can expect Creature Commandos to premiere on MAX.

DC’s Creature Commandos will star the MCU stars Frank Grillo and David Harbour, as well as Game of Thrones and Obi-Wan Kenobi star Indira Varma, Guardians of the Galaxy star Sean Gunn, and the veteran voice actor Alan Tudyk, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 star Maria Bakalova and Strangers star Zoe Chao. Viola Davis will also reprise her role as Amanda Waller, and James Gunn will serve as the writer and showrunner. The series is set to premiere on MAX in 2024.
