‘Dead City’ Season 3 Body Count: Every Major Character Who Didn’t Make It Out of Manhattan
‘The Walking Dead: Dead City‘ just wrapped its third season, and if you made it through the finale with your nerves intact, you’re doing better than most of Manhattan’s remaining survivors. The AMC spinoff has never been shy about thinning its cast, but Season 3 took that reputation and ran with it in ways that reshaped the entire show.
From returning villains to brand new faces who barely got time to settle in, the season’s body count says a lot about where ‘Dead City’ is headed next. Here’s a full rundown of who didn’t survive Season 3 of ‘The Walking Dead: Dead City’, and why each death mattered.
The Croat’s Death Opens the Season
Season 3 wasted no time closing out The Croat, with the character already bitten by the time the group tracks him down. He spends the premiere dying but manages to give up the location of a methane tank the hospital community desperately needs before the end finally takes him.
Negan holds his old frenemy as his final moments slip away, marking an unexpected end for a character who had seemed poised to eventually fight alongside Negan and Maggie against the Dama. The loss set the tone for a season that clearly had no interest in protecting legacy characters just because of their history on the flagship series.

That decision mattered beyond simple shock value, since losing the Croat freed Season 3 to move past storylines the show had been building around him since Season 2. Following his character’s death in the episode “Trillium,” actor Željko Ivanek was removed from the opening credits entirely.
The timing of the death, right at the start of the season, signaled that nobody was safe going forward, a promise the show absolutely kept.
The Dama’s Reign Comes to a Sudden End
The Dama, played by Lisa Emery, met her own end in the episode titled “Haven,” and she too was subsequently dropped from the opening credits. Emery’s turn as the mind controlling former theater critic had been one of the more memorable elements of the season for critics.
Her death, alongside the Croat’s, cleared out both of the show’s central villains within the season’s first stretch, a bold structural choice for a series that had spent two prior seasons building them up. The first two episodes of Season 3 featured some genuinely shocking deaths, with both of the show’s main antagonists unceremoniously killed off in quick succession, allowing the spinoff to move on from the baggage of the earlier seasons.
With the old guard gone, the door was wide open for new threats to step into the power vacuum, and one of them proved far more dangerous than anyone expected.
Renata’s Death Sparks a New Villain’s Rise
Renata DeLeon dies in Episode 7, and her death comes immediately after she makes one of the most important decisions of her arc as a community leader. She ultimately decides that killing Negan would go against the kind of community she has spent the season trying to build, choosing restraint over fear.
That restraint is exactly what gets her killed, as Dillard rejects her authority, turns on her, and reveals how much of the manufactured crisis around Negan had been engineered by his own hand all along. Dillard had already wounded himself earlier and blamed Negan for it, helping paint him as an uncontrollable threat and pushing Renata toward an execution she ultimately refuses to carry out.
Unfortunately, not even the newest additions to ‘Dead City’ were safe from meeting a dark end, as Dillard unexpectedly shoots Renata in Episode 7. Her death effectively hands the season’s real threat the room he needs to make his move.
Radomir and Dillard’s Fates Seal the Finale
The Season 3 finale brings its own wave of casualties, opening with a flashback to Dillard enjoying time with his pet walkers before revealing just how far gone he really is. Meanwhile, Hershel rallies the captive survivors to fight back against the guards, only for Radomir to open fire with a machine gun while shouting that he’s “too pretty to die.” He isn’t, as it turns out, since Hershel flings a knife at his head and kills him almost immediately.
The finale itself saves its biggest confrontation for Negan and Dillard, who come face to face in a battle to the death, with things looking grim for Negan until Maggie steps in and cuts off Dillard’s arm. Maggie is ready to finish him off for good, but Negan stops her, instead choosing to let his former friend turn into a walker in a twisted hope that Dillard might finally find the connection with the undead he’d always longed for.
As simple as that, another major character from ‘Dead City’ meets his untimely end, closing out one of the season’s most unpredictable villain arcs. There’s also the quieter, unconfirmed loss of Benjamin Pierce, whose fate the show never directly addressed onscreen. The character hadn’t been mentioned for most of the season, and despite an early time jump, nothing ever explained what actually happened to him, especially since Negan never once brought it up. The most telling clue is that actor Keir Gilchrist’s name was quietly removed from the opening credits between seasons, suggesting he was killed off while still trapped in the church basement from the premiere.
By the time the credits rolled on the finale, Renata, Radomir, the Croat, and Dillard were all gone, leaving Season 3 with a noticeably smaller cast than the one it started with. For a spinoff that began as a two hander built on old grudges, the season used its casualties to force Maggie and Negan into genuinely functioning as partners rather than reluctant allies.
With so much blood spilled across these eight episodes, which of these ‘Dead City’ deaths hit you the hardest, and do you think Negan and Maggie are ready for whatever comes next now that Manhattan has claimed so many of their allies.
