Disney’s next chapter in the ‘Descendants‘ saga is almost here, and fans of Red and Chloe are counting down the days. ‘Descendants: Wicked Wonderland’ is set to drop viewers back into a version of Wonderland that looks a lot less perfect than the ending of the last movie promised.

With a stacked cast, a new villain, and a plot that leans hard into the consequences of messing with the timeline, this fifth installment has a lot riding on it. Here is everything currently confirmed about the release, the story, and who is playing who.

‘Descendants: Wicked Wonderland ‘Release Date

‘Descendants: Wicked Wonderland’ is scheduled to be released on Disney Channel on July 16, 2026, with a Disney+ debut following the next day. That release pattern mirrors how Disney has handled recent entries in the franchise, giving cable audiences first access before the film moves to streaming.

The original soundtrack will also become available through Walt Disney Records on July 17, so fans hoping to stream the songs on their own time will not have to wait long after the premiere. Production on the film actually wrapped roughly a year before release, with filming taking place in Vancouver, Canada, beginning in March 2025 and wrapping before July of that same year.

‘Descendants: Wicked Wonderland’ Cast

Reprising their leading roles, Kylie Cantrall and Malia Baker return as Red, daughter of the Queen of Hearts, and Chloe Charming, daughter of Cinderella and King Charming. Leonardo Nam is also back, this time taking on a much darker role as the film’s central antagonist.

The new additions rounding out the cast are extensive. Liamani Segura joins as Pink, Brendon Tremblay as Max Hatter, Alexandro Byrd as Luis Madrigal, and Kiara Romero as Hazel Hook, alongside Joel Oulette as Robbie Hood and Zavien Garrett as Felix Facilier.

Twin brothers Squeaky and Squirmy Smee also make their way into the world, with Dayton Paradis and Ryan McEwen playing the sons of Mr. Smee, roles previously filled by different actors in ‘Descendants 3’.

On the returning side, Brandy is back as Cinderella, Rita Ora returns as the Queen of Hearts, Paolo Montalban reprises King Charming, and Melanie Paxson returns as Fairy Godmother. Rounding things out is a genuinely fun casting surprise, with Awkwafina confirmed to voice Chessy the Cat, a brand new character created for this installment.

‘Descendants: Wicked Wonderland’ Plot

The official synopsis picks up directly from where the last film left off. Now that the Queen of Hearts is nice and Cinderella is safe, everything seems perfect for Red and Chloe, but changing the past has quietly created a new villain in Maddox Hatter. That twist alone sets up a much darker conflict than the previous ‘Descendants’ entries, since the person threatening Wonderland this time is someone the girls already know.

Once Maddox captures the Queen of Hearts, Red and Chloe are forced to team up with Red’s new sister Pink, Luisa Madrigal’s son Luis, Captain Hook’s daughter Hazel, and Maddox’s own son Max in order to save her and rescue Wonderland. That last detail is especially interesting, since it means Max has to choose between loyalty to his father and doing what is right, a dynamic that echoes the moral tension the franchise has always leaned on.

Beyond the family drama, there is a bigger structural shift happening in this timeline. The story revolves around a butterfly effect caused by Red and Chloe’s time travel, and in this altered version of events, Wonderland has now joined Auradon, with the Rabbit Hole fully open to everyone. That means several storylines from the earlier films could look noticeably different going forward, since some characters have reportedly been erased or replaced entirely in the new timeline.

The franchise angle is being reinforced too, as this is officially a sequel to ‘Descendants: The Rise of Red’ and the fifth installment in the overall ‘Descendants’ film series. It is worth noting that this milestone alone makes ‘Descendants’ a franchise record holder, since it now ties or surpasses other long running Disney Channel franchises in terms of total entries.

‘Descendants: Wicked Wonderland’ Behind-the-Scenes

Kimmy Gatewood is directing the film, working from a screenplay credited to Tamara Chestna, Dan Frey, and Ru Sommer. On the producing side, Suzanne Todd and Gary Marsh serve as executive producers, with Chestna and Gatewood also co-executive producing.

Given that this is a musical entry in the franchise, choreography plays a major role in how the film comes together, and Emilio Dosal has been confirmed as choreographer. That is a notable detail for anyone tracking the creative team behind the franchise’s dance heavy sequences.

There has also been talk about what comes after this movie. According to one report, Disney has not confirmed a release date for a sixth ‘Descendants’ film, though the performance of ‘Wicked Wonderland’ could shape whether the franchise continues. For now, all eyes are on this installment and whether it lives up to the hype surrounding its darker premise.

With Maddox Hatter turning into the story’s biggest threat and Max caught in the middle of it all, this new chapter of ‘Descendants’ feels ready to shake up everything fans thought they knew about Wonderland’s happy ending. Do you think Max will side with his father or turn against him to save the Queen of Hearts?
