Did Daemon Targaryen Really Love Laena Velaryon, or Was Their Marriage Just Political Convenience?
‘House of the Dragon‘ fans have spent years debating one quiet but persistent question buried inside the Targaryen family tree. Did Daemon Targaryen actually love his second wife, Laena Velaryon, or was their marriage simply another calculated move in his endless pursuit of power.
The answer, according to both the show and George R.R. Martin’s source material, is more layered than a simple yes or no. Daemon’s relationship with Laena sits somewhere between genuine affection and cold political convenience, and untangling the two is part of what makes their story so compelling.
How Daemon and Laena’s Romance Began
Their connection first sparks at Rhaenyra and Laenor’s wedding, where the two share a flirtatious dance that hints at a future romance. Daemon Targaryen and Laena Velaryon’s dance in House of the Dragon episode 5 teases their future romance, which has a big impact on the war to come. At the time, Daemon had just been freed from his marriage to Rhea Royce and was reeling from failing to win Rhaenyra’s hand.
The last time viewers saw Daemon before his reunion with Laena, he was not in a good place, having crashed Rhaenyra’s wedding after being banished to the Vale.

It was there that he first crossed paths with ‘Laenor’s ethereally beautiful sister,’ who seemed genuinely interested in him from the start. According to the lore, when Prince Daemon Targaryen arrived on Driftmark in 115 AC, the singers claim he fell in love with Laena, although others believe he saw her as a means to further his ambition.
That ambiguity is baked into the source material itself. Daemon reportedly insulted Laena’s original betrothed until the young man had no choice but to challenge him to a duel, a fight Daemon won decisively, clearing the way for his marriage to Laena.
Why Daemon Married Into House Velaryon
The political benefits of marrying Laena were impossible to ignore. In ‘Fire & Blood,’ Daemon does wed Laena, and despite his earlier plan to seize Runestone, he instead sets his sights on becoming part of House Velaryon. The union tied him directly to the wealthiest and most powerful naval family in Westeros.
Marrying Laena meant that both Daemon and Rhaenyra ended up wed to the children of Corlys Velaryon, giving them shared access to the immense power and wealth held by House Velaryon.
That alliance would prove critical years later, when the Velaryon fleet and dragons became essential assets in the Dance of the Dragons. It is easy to see why some fans view the marriage as purely transactional, a way for Daemon to secure resources and legitimacy after his failed pursuit of the throne through Rhaenyra.
Yet the show and books both suggest Laena was never a passive pawn in this arrangement. Laena herself was disinterested in politics and far more interested in flying her dragon, Vhagar, than in the marriage schemes swirling around her. She was the one who initiated their connection at the wedding, not the other way around.
Life Together in Essos and Their Family
Once married, Daemon and Laena left Westeros entirely, choosing to build a life abroad rather than stay under Viserys’s watchful eye. Aware that the king and court would not be pleased with their marriage, Laena and Daemon flew on their dragons to Pentos, where they were hosted by the Prince of the city, before traveling on to Volantis, Qohor, and Norvos.
Their partnership produced twin daughters who would go on to play major roles in the Targaryen civil war. In 116 AC, in Pentos, Laena gave birth to their twin daughters, Rhaena and Baela, and when the children were half a year old, Laena sailed home with them to Driftmark while Daemon flew their dragons back separately.
Interestingly, Laena also formed a close bond with the other woman in Daemon’s life. Laena became good friends with her good-sister Rhaenyra Targaryen, who was said to be ‘fond and more than fond’ of her uncle’s wife, and the two families often visited one another between Dragonstone and Driftmark. That closeness has fueled endless fan theories about the emotional dynamics between all three of them.
The Tragic End of Their Marriage
Laena’s story ends in heartbreak, and the way she chose to go says everything about who she was as a person. Suffering complications during her third pregnancy, Laena resolved to die a dragonrider’s death rather than accept a risky surgery, walking to Vhagar and commanding the dragon to end her life. Before her final moments, she reportedly attempted to reach her dragon one last time.
After three days of sickness, Laena died, having tried to reach Vhagar to fly one more time before collapsing on the tower steps, where Daemon carried her body back to her bed and sat vigil with Rhaenyra by his side. That image, of both women in Daemon’s life mourning together, has stuck with fans as one of the most quietly devastating moments in the character’s arc.
As for whether Daemon truly loved her, the fan and critic consensus leans toward a complicated yes. It was Laena’s own interest in Daemon that arrested his downward spiral, transforming him from a homeless exile into the husband of the daughter of Lord Corlys and Princess Rhaenys. Some argue his feelings never rivaled what he felt for Rhaenyra, while others believe he cared for Laena deeply in his own guarded way.
Laena Velaryon’s legacy lives on well beyond her death, with her own granddaughter later named in her honor. When Laena’s daughter Baela became pregnant years later, she swore to name her first daughter Laena in her mother’s memory, and did exactly that at the child’s birth.
Do you think Daemon genuinely loved Laena, or was his heart always somewhere else on Dragonstone, and how do you think a longer arc for her character might have changed the way you see their marriage?
