Disney’s Live-Action ‘Tangled’ Just Showed off Rapunzel and Flynn Rider – Fans Are Losing It over the First Look

Disney’s live-action remake machine has churned out plenty of nostalgic reboots over the years, but few have generated quite as much sustained anticipation as its take on ‘Tangled‘. Ever since the project was confirmed, fans have been eagerly tracking every casting update and production detail, hungry for any sign of what this new version might actually look like.

That hunger only grew louder once filming officially kicked off overseas earlier this summer. With production based in Spain and shrouded in relative secrecy, most of what fans knew came from scattered set photos rather than anything officially sanctioned by the studio.

That changed at D23, where Disney finally gave fans their first real look at the film’s central duo. The brief teaser showed Teagan Croft’s Rapunzel and Milo Manheim’s Flynn Rider together on screen for the first time, immediately sending the Anaheim crowd into a frenzy and confirming a theatrical release date of March 31, 2028.

The footage itself opened with a now-iconic image, tracking along Rapunzel’s famously long blonde hair as it cascaded down cobblestone streets before the camera lifted to reveal Croft’s face. It was a deliberate nod to the character’s most recognizable visual trait, designed to give longtime fans an instant sense of familiarity before introducing anything new.

Croft and Manheim also appeared in a separate prerecorded video message, sending greetings to fans directly from the film’s production base in Spain while still in costume. It gave audiences their clearest sense yet of how the pair look fully embodying Rapunzel and Flynn Rider on screen.

The film follows the same Brothers Grimm-inspired fairytale that shaped the original 2010 animated classic, with Rapunzel spending years locked away in an isolated tower before being unexpectedly freed by the fugitive thief Flynn Rider. Michael Gracey, the director behind ‘The Greatest Showman’ and ‘Better Man’, is helming this new adaptation from a screenplay by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson.

Rounding out the cast is Kathryn Hahn as the film’s villain, Mother Gothel, whose own reveal during the same D23 panel reportedly drew the loudest reaction of the night from the crowd. Diego Luna also joins the cast in an original character created specifically for this adaptation, while Patrick and Hugo McPherson play the villainous Stabbington brothers.

Disney went all-in on the presentation, filling the Honda Center with floating lanterns as a direct callback to one of the animated film’s most beloved and visually iconic sequences. It’s the kind of immersive touch the studio has increasingly leaned on during its biggest D23 reveals, designed to make the moment feel like a genuine event rather than just another trailer drop.

Filming has been underway in Spain for several weeks, with location shoots taking place at sites including Burgos Cathedral for scenes set within the film’s kingdom. Set photos of both Croft and Manheim in costume had already begun quietly circulating online in the lead-up to the official D23 unveiling.

Fan reaction across social media has been overwhelmingly positive since the footage went public, with many praising the casting choices and the film’s apparent commitment to honoring the visual language of the original animated movie. For a remake that’s faced its share of skepticism in the buildup, the D23 reveal appears to have won over a significant chunk of the fanbase.

With a firm release date now locked in and its two leads finally revealed together, ‘Tangled’ has quickly become one of the more talked-about entries in Disney’s upcoming live-action slate.
