Doctor Doom’s Mysterious ‘Latverian Witches’ Fuel Wild Fan Theories About ‘Avengers: Doomsday’
Marvel Studios has spent the summer teasing ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ through carefully staged costume reveals and prop displays, giving fans just enough to speculate wildly without confirming much of anything outright. That strategy paid off in a major way at San Diego Comic-Con, where one particular exhibit sparked weeks of ongoing debate across the fandom.
The display in question featured a costume Marvel labeled the “Latverian Witch,” shown against a stained-glass backdrop and styled with unmistakable visual ties to Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom. The outfit’s green robes, silver face mask, and diamond-motif belt buckle immediately drew comparisons to Doom’s own design language, setting off a wave of theories about who might actually be wearing it in the finished film.
That mystery deepened further as the convention continued, with Marvel unveiling additional variations of the costume in yellow and purple, and later confirming a red version as well. Multiple witches, rather than a single character, now appear to be part of Doom’s inner circle, and fans have spent weeks trying to match each colored robe to a specific Marvel character who might be filling the role.
The most persistent theory centers on Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff, who hasn’t appeared in the MCU since her apparent death in ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.’ Under that theory, this version of the character would be reimagined as Latverian rather than Sokovian, recruited directly by Doom to weaponize her chaos magic in service of his multiversal ambitions. Adding fuel to that speculation, Marvel also revealed a Doctor Doom action figure featuring red energy attachments, a color closely associated with Wanda’s powers throughout the franchise.
Beyond Wanda, fans have floated a long list of other potential candidates for the remaining witch costumes. One widely shared theory suggested variants of Wanda Maximoff, Maria Rambeau, and Peggy Carter could all be serving as Doom’s witches, while other fans in the comments pushed back, proposing Agatha Harkness or Sylvie instead, and pointing out that the robe colors seem to echo the visual language of the Infinity Stones.
Adding another layer to the mystery, some insiders have suggested Doom could enter the film already married, with the witch potentially serving as his wife within the story rather than a recruited ally. Under that version of events, her death could serve as a catalyst pushing Doom toward the destructive path the film is expected to explore. Other outlets have pointed out that in the comics, these kinds of witches are typically tied to Cynthia von Doom, Doctor Doom’s own mother, opening yet another possible thread for who these characters could represent.
This kind of deliberately ambiguous marketing has become something of a signature move for Marvel ahead of major crossover releases, using costume displays and prop reveals to generate sustained conversation without confirming plot details outright. Given how tightly the studio has guarded casting reveals throughout ‘Doomsday’s’ promotional cycle, it’s likely fans won’t get a definitive answer until the film’s actual release.
With ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ set to hit theaters on December 18, the mystery surrounding Doctor Doom’s witches shows no signs of dying down anytime soon.
