Advance ticket sales have become one of the most reliable early indicators of just how big a blockbuster is about to become, and few films this year have generated the kind of frenzy currently building around Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi saga. What started as a strong presale rollout has quickly turned into one of the most closely watched box office stories of the season.

‘Dune: Part Three‘ has spent recent weeks steadily building anticipation ahead of its December release, with each new wave of ticket sales pushing expectations higher. That momentum reached a new peak this past week when the film’s presale numbers made headlines across the industry.

According to reports, ‘Dune: Part Three’ has already generated 10 million dollars in advance ticket sales, putting the film on pace to potentially become the first installment in the trilogy to cross 100 million dollars domestically during its opening weekend. That would mark a significant leap for a franchise that has never previously crossed that particular threshold, even during its most commercially successful stretch.

For context on just how meaningful that milestone would be, 2024’s ‘Dune: Part Two’ opened to 82 million dollars domestically before finishing its run with roughly 715 million dollars worldwide. The original 2021 film, which was hampered by its controversial same-day HBO Max release, still managed to gross more than 430 million dollars worldwide, including revenue collected from a 2024 theatrical re-release.

The scale of demand for ‘Dune: Part Three’ has already created real logistical headaches for theater chains. AMC CEO Adam Aron publicly apologized after the presale rollout overwhelmed the company’s ticketing infrastructure, sending fans into hour-long digital queues and flooding social media with reports of crashed apps and failed transactions.

Current industry tracking estimates now place the film’s potential opening weekend in the range of 125 million dollars or higher, a figure that would comfortably surpass ‘Part Two’s’ domestic debut. Much of that intensity has been fueled by the film’s exclusive access to IMAX screens during its opening weeks, since ‘Dune: Part Three’ was partially shot using IMAX cameras.

Adding another layer of anticipation, ‘Dune: Part Three’ shares its December 18 release date with Marvel’s ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ a pairing fans have already nicknamed “Dunesday.” Should both films clear 100 million dollars during the same opening weekend, it would mark an unprecedented moment in box office history, the first time two separate films have each opened above that threshold on the exact same weekend.

Directed by Denis Villeneuve throughout its entire run, the ‘Dune’ franchise has starred Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya as its central leads across all three films. ‘Part Three’ expands its ensemble further with the additions of Anya Taylor-Joy, Florence Pugh, Javier Bardem, Rebecca Ferguson, Robert Pattinson and Jason Momoa, giving the concluding chapter one of the year’s most stacked casts.

The comparison to ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ isn’t the only box office parallel drawing attention this year. ‘Dune: Part Three’s’ presale surge has been directly compared to the earlier frenzy surrounding Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey,’ which similarly overwhelmed AMC’s ticketing systems before going on to become the highest-grossing IMAX release in history.

With months still separating ‘Dune: Part Three’ from its actual theatrical debut, plenty could still shift before final opening weekend numbers are locked in. Still, given the franchise’s steady upward trajectory across all three films, and the sheer demand already reflected in early ticket sales, ‘Dune: Part Three’ appears well positioned to close out Villeneuve’s saga as its most commercially dominant chapter yet.
