The ‘Yellowstone’ universe just expanded in a very big way, and it did not come quietly. ‘Dutton Ranch‘, the long-awaited spinoff centered on Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler, hit Paramount+ on May 15, 2026, and fans are already buzzing about more than just the returning leads.

Among the fresh faces turning heads in Rio Paloma, Texas, one character is quietly threading himself into the most dangerous web on the show. Chet, played by Hart Denton, arrived as a wrangler for the rival 10 Petal Ranch, but the premiere episodes made it very clear that this man is carrying far more than a saddle.

Hart Denton Brings Chet to Life in the ‘Yellowstone’ Spinoff

Hart Denton, known to fans from his work on ‘Riverdale’ and ’13 Reasons Why’, joined ‘Dutton Ranch’ in a recurring role as Chet, an employee at the major rival ranch at the center of the show’s conflict. It is a significant leap in profile for the Arkansas-born actor, and the casting immediately caught the attention of franchise followers when it was announced.

Denton’s breakthrough on television came when he was cast as Chic Cooper in ‘Riverdale’, a role that brought him widespread recognition for his portrayal of a complex and mysterious character, with his performance earning praise for adding dramatic depth to the series. That ability to inhabit morally ambiguous figures appears to have made him a natural fit for the layered world Taylor Sheridan has built.

Born in Little Rock, Arkansas, Denton has steadily built his resume since his early career appearances, and his work on ‘The Duel’ and ‘American Cherry’ helped demonstrate his range as a screen performer. Landing a recurring spot in one of Paramount+’s most anticipated premieres of the year signals a genuine step up for the actor.

Chet’s Role in the 10 Petal Ranch Power Struggle

In the opening moments of the premiere, audiences meet Rob-Will, played by Jai Courtney, and Chet together as representatives of the 10 Petal Ranch, and neither man makes a reassuring first impression. The scene sets up the central antagonist dynamic of the series with brutal efficiency.

With Chet watching on, Rob-Will confronts a ranch hand named Wes for allegedly accusing 10 Petal of fixing their books, and in a fit of rage kills him, burying the body in a field. This puts Chet in an impossible position, and Beulah Jackson subsequently blackmails him into taking on Rob-Will’s role of ranch foreman, sending another wrangler to hospital as Chet asserts his new authority.

According to Chet’s account of events, word had been spreading through the bunkhouse at the Jackson camp that some of the ear tags were being flagged in the tally book for auction while others were not, which is what triggered Rob-Will’s violent response. Chet becomes an unwilling keeper of that secret, and the entire weight of 10 Petal’s corruption now rests partially on his shoulders.

Chet is described as being entirely in over his head after witnessing the murder, thrust into the foreman position through blackmail rather than merit, while the missing Wes creates spreading mistrust and physical confrontations among the cowboys in the 10 Petals’ bunkhouse. It is the kind of pressure cooker scenario that tends to produce either heroes or powder kegs.

The Rival Ranch Conflict Driving ‘Dutton Ranch’ Forward

The series follows Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler as they fight to survive on their 7,000-acre ranch amid tough times and stiff competition, while also ensuring their young ward Carter becomes the man he is supposed to be. ‘Dutton Ranch’ serves as both a spinoff and sequel to ‘Yellowstone’ and is the fifth television series in the Yellowstone franchise, premiering on Paramount+ on May 15, 2026 and consisting of nine episodes.

The official logline for ‘Dutton Ranch’ reads that as Beth and Rip fight to build a future together far from the ghosts of ‘Yellowstone’, they collide with brutal new realities and a ruthless rival ranch that will stop at nothing to protect its empire, with the show emphasizing that in South Texas, blood runs deeper and forgiveness is fleeting. 10 Petal Ranch is that ruthless rival, and Chet is now one of its most compromised figures.

Annette Bening, a five-time Academy Award nominee as well as a BAFTA and Golden Globe winner, joins ‘Dutton Ranch’ as Beulah Jackson, the powerful, charming, and cunning head of a major rival ranch in Texas. Her grip over Chet through blackmail is one of the most quietly chilling elements the premiere established, and it promises to fuel some of the season’s most compelling drama.

Beth, Rip, and the Texas Newcomers Setting Up Season-Long Stakes

At the end of ‘Yellowstone’ season 5 part 2, Beth and Rip moved to a separate Montana ranch to start over, but at the beginning of ‘Dutton Ranch’ it burns down as a wildfire takes hold of the local area, forcing the couple south to Texas. That fiery opening sets a fittingly dramatic tone for everything that follows.

Rip Wheeler rode his horse straight into a wildfire to save a baby calf in the premiere, an action sequence involving real flames that signaled to many viewers that ‘Dutton Ranch’ was bringing a production ambition the franchise had not always delivered. Paired with the introduction of Chet as a trapped witness inside 10 Petal’s corruption, the show is working on multiple dramatic registers simultaneously.

Meanwhile, Carter and Oreana find themselves in a Romeo and Juliet situation, given that Oreana is Rob-Will’s daughter and next in line to run the Jackson ranch, even as she appears to want nothing to do with her family. That dynamic places the next generation directly inside the same ranch war that Chet is now being forced to manage from the inside.

Ed Harris also joins the series as Everett McKinney, a good-humored and weathered veteran who serves as veterinarian and treats animals with compassion and understanding, giving Beth and Rip an ally as they try to establish themselves in a territory the Jacksons have clearly dominated for years. With Chet now holding dangerous knowledge about a murder and an empire built on fraud, the question of which way he breaks could shape the entire season.

With all of this unfolding in just the first two episodes, where do you think Chet’s loyalty will land when the walls of 10 Petal Ranch finally start to close in around him?
