‘Dutton Ranch’ Producer Taylor Sheridan Says He Landed an Acting Role After Threatening to “Knock You the F–k Out”
Taylor Sheridan is now best known as the creator behind the Yellowstone universe. He built one of the biggest TV franchises in recent years, starting with Yellowstone in 2018 on Paramount Network. That show became a major hit and helped bring back interest in modern Western stories. It later expanded into multiple spin-offs, including shows like 1883, Tulsa King, Landman, and more recent series connected to the Dutton family story.
But before all of that success as a writer and producer, Sheridan was trying to make it as an actor. He appeared in shows like Veronica Mars, Walker, Texas Ranger, Sons of Anarchy, and later had roles in projects connected to his own work. Acting was actually his first path in Hollywood before he moved into creating and writing his own stories.
In his interview with Howard Stern, Sheridan looked back at a moment from his early acting days that stood out to him. He described an audition situation where another actor kept interrupting him. According to Sheridan, he warned the actor to stop. He said things escalated quickly after that.
Sheridan recalled the moment clearly and said, “I told him I was gonna. I’m like, ‘Look, if you interrupt me again, I’m going to knock you the f–k out,’ and he looked at me like I was nuts. Then he kept talking, and I was just sitting on the couch kind of like this, and I just went pop, and then I knew this is over.”
He said he hit the other actor during the audition and immediately assumed he had ruined his chances of getting the role. After it happened, he left thinking the job was gone.
Sheridan explained that he told the people in the room he was leaving. He believed the situation was over. But what happened next surprised him. He later found out that he actually got the role.
According to his story, when he returned to his talent agency, they told him he had been hired. He said he was confused because he did not expect that outcome at all.
The role itself, as Sheridan described it, was a very simple one. It was a small acting job in a commercial-style scene where he played a character interacting with furniture. He joked that there was not much skill required for it, and it was more of a basic performance than anything serious.
Sheridan also shared another moment from that job where he spoke to someone on set who turned out to be the executive producer. He said he did not realize who the person was at first and only learned later that the producer had hired him specifically because of the incident during the audition.
After that early period, Sheridan slowly moved away from acting roles in other people’s projects. In recent years, most of his appearances have been in shows he helped create or produce, such as Yellowstone and 1883. His last appearances outside his own work were much earlier, with small roles in films and TV shows.
Would you still hire an actor after an on-set punch incident?
Today, Sheridan is focused mainly on writing and producing. He continues to expand his TV universe with new series and film projects, while his acting career has mostly taken a back seat. Still, his story from The Howard Stern Show shows a very different side of his early days in Hollywood, when he was still trying to figure things out as an actor.
