‘Dutton Ranch’ Stars Address Season 2 Showrunner Replacement After Taylor Sheridan Exit
Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser are opening up about the future of “Dutton Ranch” after the Yellowstone spinoff went through a major behind-the-scenes change. The actors have shared their thoughts on the decision to bring in Benjamin Cavell as the new showrunner for season 2, and both stars appear excited about what comes next.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Dutton Ranch” faced an unexpected creative shake-up before its first season even premiered. Creator Chad Feehan was reportedly no longer returning as showrunner after disagreements involving the direction of the series. The situation created uncertainty around the show’s future, but Paramount+ later confirmed that season 2 was moving forward with Cavell taking over as the new showrunner.
During their interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Hauser and Reilly discussed the transition for the first time. Hauser explained that he became interested in Cavell after getting a recommendation from someone he deeply trusts. He said the person had worked with Cavell before on the CBS series “SEAL Team” and described him as “somebody that I trust with my life.”
Hauser explained that he and this longtime friend had gone through intense experiences together, including training and spending time together in Louisiana. After hearing about Cavell’s creative approach, Hauser said he wanted to learn more about the new showrunner’s vision for the series.
The actor said he had a positive early meeting with Cavell and is looking forward to seeing what the new creative team can bring to the show. “I cannot wait for this new iteration of Ben and his team of guys that he hires, along with David Glasser and the people who are involved, and to really sink our teeth into what this next show is going to be,” Hauser said.
Kelly Reilly also shared her excitement about season 2, although she joked that she was ready for some time away after the busy promotion period for the first season. Still, she admitted that she has already started thinking about where Beth’s story could go next.
Reilly praised Cristina Voros, an executive producer and director from season 1, who will continue working on the series. She called Voros a “lighthouse creative” and said her involvement gives the team confidence moving forward.

“Everything we do goes through her brain because she’s so brilliant, and she’s going to be working with Ben. I feel like we’ve got a bit of an A-team,” Reilly said. She also revealed that Taylor Sheridan is expected to remain involved with story ideas for the upcoming season.
The comments suggest that season 2 will have more involvement from Sheridan, especially after the reported creative disagreements that happened during the first season. With Reilly and Hauser also serving as executive producers, the team appears focused on making the next chapter even stronger.
Cavell’s appointment has also received attention because of his previous television work. He was part of the creative team behind “Justified,” earned an Emmy nomination for his work on “Homeland,” and developed the television adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Institute.”
However, fans may have to wait a while before seeing new episodes. Hauser explained that the season 2 writers’ room is still in the early stages, meaning scripts are not ready yet. Production could still take time, and a return date may not arrive until late 2027.
