Johnny Depp’s history with Aerosmith stretches back more than a decade, and it has produced some of rock’s most entertaining crossover moments. The actor has played alongside the band’s guitarist Joe Perry in Hollywood Vampires since 2012, and he has popped up in Aerosmith’s own shows before. So when the Boston legends announced a rare comeback in Los Angeles, it wasn’t hard to imagine a few famous friends might show up.

The occasion was ‘California, Dream On: Aerosmith & Friends’, a 2-night event at the Hollywood Bowl on October 29 and November 1. Aerosmith had declared themselves retired from touring in August 2024 because of a vocal injury suffered by frontman Steven Tyler, which made the concert announcement a genuine shock. The band’s last full concert had been more than 3 years earlier.

The first night lived up to the billing. Guns N’ Roses joined the celebration with a set of their own, with Axl Rose and Slash also paying tribute to Aerosmith by performing a handful of the band’s songs. Dave Grohl, meanwhile, took over drum duties for nearly the entire show, and the lineup of guests was announced to include The Black Crowes, Heart and Run-D.M.C.

Then came the moment fans are still talking about. Just before the night’s closing number, Joe Perry called Depp out on stage to play guitar on ‘Train Kept A-Rollin’, one of the last 2 songs of the evening. Perry, 76, introduced his Hollywood Vampires bandmate to huge cheers, while 78-year-old Tyler laughed along beside him.

Depp, 63, traded guitar lines with Perry in a dual attack that drew big applause, and video of the cameo spread online almost immediately. The song was followed by the final performance of the night, ‘Walk This Way’. For a crowd that had already seen a star-packed evening, it felt like a perfect cherry on top.

If it all felt strangely natural, that’s because Depp has done this before. He joined Aerosmith on the same song at the Hollywood Bowl on August 6, 2012, at a show introduced by comics icon Stan Lee. He later returned for the group’s final encore at a Boston gig, where he took an unaccompanied bluesy guitar solo while Perry and Brad Whitford looked on.

His connection goes deeper than guest spots. Depp also sang backing vocals on ‘Freedom Fighter’, a track from Aerosmith’s album ‘Music From Another Dimension’. To longtime fans, the latest cameo is less a surprise than the next chapter in a long-running friendship.

That friendship grew out of Hollywood Vampires, the supergroup formed in 2012 by Alice Cooper, Depp and Perry. Cooper and Depp met on the set of ‘Dark Shadows’, and the band’s name comes from a 1970s celebrity drinking club that Cooper was part of. Over time, the project has grown from a passion project into a full-time touring act.

The group has stayed busy this year, with a 19-date European tour featuring Cooper, Depp, Perry and Tommy Henriksen. A documentary about the band opened the Boston Film Festival in September, and Perry has said the group is talking about making another album in 2027. In other words, Depp’s turn on the Hollywood Bowl stage wasn’t a one-off detour but part of an active musical life.

Depp wasn’t the only headline of the night. The setlist included ‘Toys in the Attic’, ‘Back in the Saddle’, ‘Sweet Emotion’ and ‘Dream On’, the latter performed with Tyler at a white grand piano. The comeback also reportedly marked the return of drummer Joey Kramer, based on rehearsal photos that surfaced ahead of the shows.

Notably, the evening drew strong reactions from fans eager to see how Tyler’s voice would hold up after his injury, and the attention around the surprise guests only added to the buzz. Aerosmith are scheduled to return for the second Hollywood Bowl show on November 1, with the guest list expected to vary.

For Depp, the cameo is a reminder that his music career has never been a sideshow. Whether he’s trading riffs with Perry in front of thousands or fronting a supergroup across Europe, he clearly loves the stage.

What was the highlight of Johnny Depp joining Aerosmith on stage at the Hollywood Bowl?
