Elon Musk Gets Slammed After Vowing AI Will Make His Own ‘The Odyssey’ Movie

Elon Musk’s plan to create his own AI version of ‘The Odyssey’ has already sparked strong reactions from people in Hollywood, with one filmmaker openly attacking the billionaire’s views on movies and art.

Musk recently announced that his AI tool Grok Imagine would create a full-length version of Homer’s ancient epic before the end of the year. The Tesla and SpaceX CEO said the project would be “historically accurate and true to the art of Homer,” while also sharing a short AI-generated clip based on the story.

The announcement came after Musk spent months criticizing Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of ‘The Odyssey.’ His comments about the film’s casting choices caused controversy before the movie even reached theaters, but the film has since become a major box office success.

Scott Derrickson, the director behind films like ‘Doctor Strange’ and ‘The Black Phone,’ was one of the first filmmakers to respond publicly to Musk’s announcement. Writing on Musk’s own social media platform X, Derrickson criticized the billionaire’s understanding of filmmaking.

“Clearly @elonmusk doesn’t know shit about cinema & he stopped reading in his 20s,” Derrickson wrote. “His opinions on art are worthless.”

Musk’s criticism of Nolan’s movie began months before its release. In March, he accused Nolan of making casting choices based on political reasons after Lupita Nyong’o was cast as Helen of Troy. Musk wrote that “Chris Nolan is an anti-White racist” and claimed the director made the decision because “he wants the awards.”

He also argued that Nolan had lost his artistic integrity and described the casting as an insult to Homer’s original work. Musk later amplified criticism aimed at Elliot Page, who appears in the movie as Sinon, after some online users incorrectly speculated about the actor’s role.

Despite the backlash surrounding the casting, ‘The Odyssey’ has performed extremely well with audiences. The film opened with $264 million worldwide and has continued drawing large crowds, with premium format screenings remaining highly popular.

Musk’s comments about movies are not new. He has previously criticized other major Hollywood releases, including ‘Barbie’ for its feminist themes and Disney’s ‘Snow White’ remake starring Rachel Zegler. His comments have often placed him at the center of wider debates about culture, entertainment and what audiences expect from modern films.

Now, his decision to create an AI-made version of ‘The Odyssey’ has created another debate about the future of filmmaking. Musk has presented the project as an example of what artificial intelligence can achieve, while critics question whether AI can truly replace the creativity, performances and human decisions involved in making a movie.
