Broadcast television has enjoyed a notable resurgence in character-driven procedurals that balance episodic mystery with serialized personal evolution. Anchored by Carrie Preston’s irrepressible energy, the CBS dramedy ‘Elsbeth‘ continues to carve out a whimsical niche within the television universe created by Robert King and Michelle King. By subverting the classic inverted mystery popularized by ‘Columbo’, the series thrives on character eccentricities rather than grim procedural tropes.

The procedural established its longevity quickly after critics embraced its sunny Manhattan backdrop and disarming comedic charm. Network faith solidified early on when Variety confirmed that the series had earned an early second-season renewal, setting up multi-year narrative momentum. Now into its fourth season, the spin-off has embraced deeper character studies that test the beloved sleuth far beyond courtroom walls.

The latest installment, season four, episode four, titled ‘A Bad Lie’, brings those personal and professional worlds into collision. Directed by Joe Menendez and written by Leah Nanako Winkler, the hour forces Elsbeth to balance wedding preparations with a staged country club homicide. Discussing the episode’s dual focus, showrunner Jonathan Tolins told TV Insider that “the family story intersects with a murder investigation, and Lydia sees that what Elsbeth is doing with her life now actually is very impressive to people”.

The 11th Hole Deception and a Fatal Confrontation

The hour opens at the exclusive Nickerson Country Club during its 17th Annual Scholarship Fund Charity Golf Tournament. Desperate for social validation and a $250,000 private jet trip to Aspen, unpopular dentist Perry Macintyre (Nat Faxon) lines up his swing at the 11th hole. When a beverage cart attendant distracts onlookers, Perry falsely claims a miracle shot after a ball marked “Molotov 6” is recovered from the cup.

Club president Trip Langenhagen immediately doubts the dentist’s sudden athletic stroke. His suspicions solidify after catching Perry searching the brush and discovering a duplicate “Molotov 6” ball. Trip threatens immediate expulsion, callously noting Perry was only admitted because he offered discounted braces to members’ children.

Overwhelmed by panic and humiliation, Perry strikes Trip in the head with a heavy rock. Taking advantage of an approaching storm, he drags the unconscious president near a well under a fragile Osage orange tree. Perry then pulls down a massive branch over the body to disguise the homicide as a weather-related tragedy.

In-Law Tensions Meet an Insurance Investigation

Elsbeth arrives at the club under completely separate, emotionally loaded circumstances. Accompanied by her critical mother Lydia (Christine Ebersole), she meets Glenn and Yvette Stratton (Damian Young and Erika Woods) to discuss wedding plans for her son Teddy (Ben Levi Ross) and fiancé Roy (Hayward Leach). Lydia repeatedly warns Elsbeth to suppress her flamboyant quirks, fearing she will embarrass the family before high-society in-laws.

Her visit derails when Elsbeth crosses paths with claims investigator Rory Torkelson (Kurt Fuller), who is auditing the tournament’s lavish payout. Their dynamic partnership introduces snappy banter, which detailed in an exclusive preview by TVLine celebrated as a welcome reunion of King universe alumni. Rory is immediately impressed by Elsbeth’s instincts as they examine the suspicious timeline together.

‘A Bad Lie’ Ending Explained: Unearthing the Osage Clue

Elsbeth finds Perry’s eager rush to install a commemorative plaque suspiciously tasteless following the president’s sudden demise. Reconstructing the errant drive, Elsbeth and Rory discover Perry’s real golf ball submerged in an adjacent estate pond. Crucially, forensic residue of Osage orange tree sap on the recovered ball and Perry’s gear directly ties him to the staged scene.

Gathering the suspects and family in the club entryway, Elsbeth orchestrates a dramatic reenactment of the crime. Confronted with the blood-marked stone and the retrieved pond ball, Perry confesses and is placed under arrest. To Lydia’s surprise, the Strattons express immense delight in Elsbeth’s brilliance, warmly embracing her eccentric genius.
