Emily Blunt Opens Up About the One Comedy Film She Wishes She Could Forget
Emily Blunt really cares about the movies she picks. In fact, she thinks an actor is known by their film choices just like a musician is judged by their albums. Because of this, she always looks closely at every script that comes her way.
She opened up about this during a chat on the Howard Stern Show. She said, I take such pride in the decisions that I make, and they mean so much to me, the films that I do. I care very deeply, very, very much, about the choices I make. That’s all I have, the choices that I make.
She even mentioned how much she loved Iron Man and how badly she wanted to work with Robert Downey Jr. She was offered the role of Black Widow and thought it would have been amazing, but she had to turn it down.
Instead, she was stuck doing a movie she did not want to do because of an old contract. That movie was Gulliver’s Travels, which came out in 2010. She said, I was contracted to do Gulliver’s Travels. I didn’t want to do Gulliver’s Travels. This was a rare time where contract rules took over her career, and she had to put her own careful decision-making to the side.
The movie was directed by Rob Letterman and starred Jack Black as Lemuel Gulliver. It was a modern version of the famous old book by Jonathan Swift. In this version, Gulliver works in a newspaper mailroom and ends up in a strange land filled with tiny people. Even though the movie made good money and doubled its budget at the box office, movie critics absolutely hated it.
Reviewers slammed the film for ignoring the smart satire of the original book. On the website Rotten Tomatoes, it got a terrible 19% score. Critics said the movie relied too much on childish humor and silly special effects instead of good writing. For example, many reviewers pointed out how dumb the jokes were, like a famous scene where Jack Black’s character puts out a palace fire by peeing on it.

Even though Blunt did not want to be there, she still liked the people on set. She said, There were a lot of really lovely people who were heaven to work with. I actually had a good time, a laugh, with all of them, but it irked my heart for it to have happened in the first place.
Making the movie might have been fun for the cast, but it was not a great experience for the audience. The film is widely seen as a wrong turn in Blunt’s career. Her acting in it did not really stand out for good or bad reasons, but the whole situation served as a big lesson for her to never get forced into a movie she does not want to make again.
