Emma D’Arcy Warns Rhaenyra Is Becoming More Dangerous Than Ever in ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 3
Rhaenyra Targaryen has spent years fighting for the Iron Throne, but according to Emma D’Arcy, that fight is starting to change her in dangerous ways.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, the House of the Dragon star opened up about Rhaenyra’s emotional journey in Season 3, especially after the devastating death of her son Jacaerys Velaryon. D’Arcy explained that the loss pushes Rhaenyra into a darker place and changes how she views her mission to become queen.
The death of Jace becomes one of the most painful moments Rhaenyra has faced. After seeing his body, she struggles to accept what happened, breaking down while repeating his name and refusing to believe he is gone. D’Arcy admitted that the scene was one of the hardest moments they had to film.
“I very rarely dread scenes. Often in our job, ironically, the larger the emotional scale, the more fun, the more engaging, the more there is to do,” D’Arcy told Entertainment Weekly. “That was the one that I dreaded this season and was pretty grim actually on the day.”
For D’Arcy, Rhaenyra’s pain comes from losing more than just her son. Jace was one of the few people who made her feel less alone after years of fighting against people who questioned her right to rule.
“Rhaenyra requires companionship in a really profound way,” D’Arcy explained. “There is a very beautiful revelation that happens for her when she has children, in discovering, actually, that companionship can be in a mother-child relationship. That’s epitomized by her relationship with Jace.”
The actor added that the bond between Rhaenyra and Jace was strong enough to fill the loneliness she had carried for years, making his death almost impossible for her to accept.
The emotional loss quickly leads to a major political move. Rhaenyra and Daemon Targaryen travel to King’s Landing to take control of the capital. Instead of a heroic victory, however, her arrival becomes a complicated moment filled with violence and difficult choices.
One of those choices comes when Daemon discovers Otto Hightower, Alicent’s father, imprisoned in the Red Keep. With Aegon and Aemond missing, Otto becomes the person who pays the price. Rhaenyra personally kills him before taking her place on the Iron Throne.

Matt Smith, who plays Daemon, said the moment represents a huge shift for Rhaenyra.
“It’s a real statement,” Smith said, explaining that killing Otto was not just an act of violence but a message about the side Rhaenyra had chosen. Looking ahead, D’Arcy teased that Rhaenyra’s belief in her own mission will become even stronger. The character may begin seeing her fight as something bigger than politics. “There is a growing belief that hers is a holy war, that she has a divine mandate to rule, and that any action she takes in pursuit of that aim has godly backing,” D’Arcy said.
The actor believes this mindset could become one of Rhaenyra’s biggest dangers because it removes doubt and makes compromise harder.
“It disables more nuanced conversation,” D’Arcy explained. “I do think that increasingly extreme position is one of the tinderboxes that now sits in season 3.”
As the war for Westeros continues, Rhaenyra may finally have the crown she always wanted. But Season 3 suggests that the cost of wearing it could change her more than she ever expected.
