Eric Kripke Reveals Which ‘The Boys’ Character Was Hardest to Say Goodbye To
Eric Kripke is opening up about the emotional side of ending The Boys, and surprisingly, the character he says was hardest to say goodbye to was not one of the show’s heroes or major emotional players. Instead, it was The Deep.
During an interview with Rotten Tomatoes, the longtime showrunner reflected on wrapping up the hit superhero series and admitted that Kevin Moskowitz, better known as The Deep, became one of the most entertaining characters for the writers over the years because of how ridiculous and clueless he was.
“The Deep is hard to say goodbye to. He’s just so stupid. Writing stupid is so fun,” Kripke said. “And his death is as absurd and ridiculous as his life. And I think people will really, really enjoy that.”
Kripke also explained that while there were other characters he felt more emotionally attached to, The Deep always brought a different kind of energy into the writers room.
“There’s obviously characters I’m way more connected to emotionally,” he continued. “But with the way Chase played him, the closest we ever got in the writers room to just playing was whenever we were working on The Deep.”
The character, played by Chace Crawford, spent five seasons becoming one of the strangest and most chaotic figures in the series. While many characters in The Boys dealt with dark emotional arcs or brutal violence, The Deep often delivered awkward comedy, bizarre conversations with sea creatures, and some of the show’s most uncomfortable moments. His final scene in the series finale fully leaned into that madness.
In the last episode of Season 5, titled Blood and Bone, The Deep meets a violent and ironic end after years of betraying the very marine life he claimed to care about. His downfall begins earlier in the season after a fight involving Black Noir II leads to a catastrophic oil pipeline explosion in Alaska. The disaster reportedly killed over 1.4 billion fish and completely destroyed whatever relationship The Deep still had with the ocean.

Later in the season, his hammerhead shark companion Xander warns him that sea creatures have officially turned against him. The message is simple: if he ever enters the ocean again, he will die immediately.
That warning becomes reality during the final battle of the series.
During a confrontation at the White House, Annie January, also known as Starlight, fights The Deep and eventually blasts him directly into the ocean using her powers. The moment he lands in the water, sea creatures swarm him from every direction.
Before he can escape, a giant squid attacks and kills him in brutal fashion. Right before the fatal moment, one of the marine animals screams, “Justice for Ambrosius!”
The line references Ambrosius, the octopus voiced by Tilda Swinton that The Deep claimed to love during Season 4 before eventually killing her himself.
The scene ends with Starlight watching in shock as the ocean itself becomes The Deep’s executioner.
For fans of The Boys, the death felt perfectly fitting for a character who spent years causing destruction while refusing to take responsibility for anything. Even Kripke admitted the absurdity of the moment matched the character perfectly.
After years of strange behavior, embarrassing failures, and endless chaos, The Deep’s story ended in the most bizarre way possible, exactly how fans of the show probably expected it to.
