Euphoria ended its final season with strong audience numbers despite mixed critical reception. The series, which stars Zendaya alongside Sydney Sweeney, Jacob Elordi, Hunter Schafer, and Maude Apatow, continued to grow in viewership right up to its finale.

The final episode aired on May 31 and brought in nearly 9 million viewers across platforms, according to HBO. That number marked an increase compared to the season premiere, which drew around 8.5 million viewers. This growth at the end of the season was notable because many shows typically see a drop-off as they conclude.

A month after the finale, Nielsen released its streaming report for the week of June 1 to June 7. That data showed that Euphoria remained highly watched even after its final episode aired, with a significant spike in total viewing minutes across streaming platforms.

Nielsen listed the show as one of the top-performing acquired series for that week. It placed fifth overall in that category, behind long-running and widely watched titles like Grey’s Anatomy, The Big Bang Theory, and SpongeBob SquarePants. It also ranked behind the animated hit Bluey, which led the list.

During the June 1 to June 7 tracking week, Euphoria accumulated 666 million minutes watched. While that number stood out due to its coincidence with the number “666,” there is no indication from Nielsen or HBO that it has any meaning beyond raw viewing data.

The series has had a complicated reception throughout its run. While it became a major cultural hit after its 2019 debut and second season in 2022, its final season faced criticism from reviewers. According to Rotten Tomatoes, the season holds a 43% rating, making it the lowest-rated installment of the show.

The consensus cited issues with structure and storytelling, describing it as uneven and unfocused. Despite this, audience interest remained strong, suggesting a gap between critical response and viewer engagement.

The production of the final season was also widely discussed behind the scenes. The long gap between seasons created scheduling challenges as the main cast became major Hollywood stars. Zendaya in particular saw her career expand significantly, taking on major film roles while the show was in production.

Creator Sam Levinson also faced public scrutiny following the reception of his HBO series The Idol, which was poorly received. These factors contributed to increased attention on Euphoria’s final season before it aired.

Despite criticism, the show’s streaming performance shows continued interest in its characters and storylines. The combination of weekly Nielsen data and HBO’s internal numbers suggests that the series maintained a strong audience base through its conclusion.

The final season’s promotional messaging, including the phrase “May God have mercy,” reflected the darker tone of its storyline. Zendaya’s character arc, which leaned more heavily into themes of faith and personal struggle, was a central part of the final episodes.

While Euphoria has now ended its run, its final season demonstrates a clear divide between critical opinion and audience viewing habits. According to HBO and Nielsen data, the series finished not with declining interest, but with one of its strongest viewing periods.
