There are actors who ride a wave of publicity, and then there are actors who shape it entirely on their own terms. Eve Hewson, the Irish actress currently drawing serious award season conversation for her role in ‘Disclosure Day’, is firmly in the second category. As the film continues its run in cinemas, a striking new black and white editorial for HUNGER magazine, shot by legendary photographer Rankin, has arrived to remind audiences that this is a woman very much at the height of her powers.

The spread captures Hewson in a series of looks that range from sleek and intense to quietly brooding, all rendered in moody monochrome. Rankin, known for his ability to draw out an unguarded authenticity in his subjects, delivers exactly that here. The images were shared widely on social media, quickly racking up thousands of likes and reigniting conversation about an actress who has spent more than a decade quietly building one of the most interesting careers in contemporary film.

The timing of the editorial is no coincidence. ‘Disclosure Day’, directed and produced by Steven Spielberg from a screenplay by David Koepp, was theatrically released in the United States on June 12, starring an ensemble cast that includes Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson, and Colman Domingo. Hewson plays former nun Jane, who gets unwillingly dragged into global chaos when her boyfriend, a cybersecurity administrator played by Josh O’Connor, threatens to release classified files proving the existence of aliens.

Hewson is generating early Oscar buzz for her performance in ‘Disclosure Day’, but she is no stranger to acting nominations in her native country, having previously been nominated for Best Lead Actress in a Drama for ‘Behind Her Eyes’ and twice for Best Supporting Actress for ‘Bad Sisters’. What makes this moment feel different is the scale of the platform. A Spielberg film is a different kind of spotlight entirely, and Hewson appears to be stepping into it with complete ease.

Speaking to HUNGER about the experience of returning to work with the director, Hewson reflected on how much had changed since their first collaboration. “I never thought I’d get another chance to work with him,” she said. “And now it’s that dream come true moment.” She also revealed just how personal her connection to this particular project runs, admitting she had been obsessed with ‘E.T.’ as a child and had once made people call her by the film’s main character’s name. “It blows my mind,” she said of finding herself at the centre of a Spielberg sci-fi story. “Even my friends and family are blown away, because they know my obsession with E.T.”

The role itself gave her something creatively rare to work with. “Jane has this moral compass. She really has a good heart. She believes in the truth, she believes in humanity, and then there’s this version of her that is literally the opposite,” Hewson said at the film’s red carpet. “And so I got to do both, which was special.”

Hewson is the daughter of activist Ali Hewson and U2 lead singer Bono, and studied drama at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts before graduating in 2013. Despite the famous last name, she has consistently had to push against assumptions. “They didn’t want me to get caught up in the movie business. I mean, look at the music industry, at the movie industry, it is stark,” she told Byrdie about her parents’ initial reluctance. “They were concerned for their 15-year-old child that, all of a sudden, came home and was like: I want to be an actress.”

Those early battles seem to have built exactly the kind of resilience the HUNGER images project. The Rankin shoot captures something steelier beneath the glamour. Spielberg told RTÉ Entertainment that it was Hewson’s work in ‘Bad Sisters’ that secured her the part in ‘Disclosure Day’. “I thought of her because I was a big fan of ‘Bad Sisters’. I thought she did extraordinary work in that. So, she got the part pretty quickly,” he said.

Josh O’Connor added, “As Steven said, she’s an extraordinary actor but she’s also so fun to work with. She’s also a brilliant friend and very supportive.” Coming from a co-star on a Spielberg film, that is some endorsement.

With ‘Disclosure Day’ in cinemas now and Oscar conversations already swirling, the HUNGER editorial lands as a perfectly timed statement of intent. Let us know in the comments what you think of Eve Hewson’s HUNGER magazine shoot and whether you think she is heading for awards glory this season.
