Every New and Returning Face That Makes ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ Season 2 Worth the Wait
The wait is finally over for fans of Netflix’s live-action reimagining of the beloved Nickelodeon franchise. All seven episodes of ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender‘ Season 2 began streaming on June 25, bringing with it a journey deep into Earth Kingdom territory and a cast list that has been growing for well over a year.
From a fan-favorite earthbender making her long-awaited debut to a sprawling ensemble of Earth Kingdom newcomers, the new season has no shortage of fresh faces alongside the core Gaang. Season 2 marks the biggest cast expansion the live-action series has had so far, and the roster is stacked with talent ready to make their mark on this world.
The Live Action Toph Beifong Fans Have Been Waiting For
From the moment the live-action reimagining of ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ was announced, fans looked forward to the Season 2 arrival of one of the franchise’s most beloved characters, Toph Beifong, now played by Miyako. Co-showrunner Jabbar Raisani described the casting process as extensive, with the team reviewing over 6,000 submissions before narrowing it down to a chemistry read with Miyako.
Executive producers Christine Boylan and Jabbar Raisani spoke exclusively to Netflix Tudum about the decision, saying that after countless tapes, they both had the same reaction and that Miyako was simply their Toph. The actor herself grew up worshipping the original animated show. At 10 years old, she did an interview where someone asked if she would want to play Toph should there ever be a live-action series, a scenario she considered so far-fetched that she barely entertained it, until it actually happened.
Bringing the beloved earthbender to life required Miyako to undergo six weeks of stunt training covering extensive martial arts, as well as dedicated work with blindness consultant Joe Strechay, who provided her with a thorough education about the blindness community and people with low vision. The production also crafted 20 pairs of prosthetic silicone feet for the character, and Miyako wore vision-obscuring contact lenses throughout filming to authentically portray Toph’s unique way of experiencing the world.
Strechay explained that even within a world of science fiction and superpowers, the goal was for children who are blind or have low vision to watch the show and see themselves in the character, and that Miyako played a major role in developing the live-action version of Toph. Executive producer Ryan Halprin echoed that sentiment, describing it as amazing to watch Miyako approach the role with such discipline and commitment.
The Returning Avatar Season 2 Cast Levels Up
Returning cast members for the new season include Gordon Cormier as Aang, Kiawentiio as Katara, Ian Ousley as Sokka, Dallas Liu as Zuko, Elizabeth Yu as Azula, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as Iroh, Daniel Dae Kim as Fire Lord Ozai, Momona Tamada as Ty Lee, and Thalia Tran as Mai. The ensemble that audiences fell in love with in the first season is back, but the emotional weight on each of them has shifted considerably.

At the close of Season 1, Aang had begun fully embracing his destiny as the Avatar after helping defend the Northern Water Tribe, while Katara stepped into her power as a waterbender and Sokka proved himself as a leader and strategist. Season 2 picks up that momentum and pushes every character further than they have been before.
Kiawentiio described Katara’s season-long arc as centering on confidence and independence, noting that throughout the season her character is finding her footing with Toph being introduced while also figuring out her feelings for Aang. Gordon Cormier reflected on Aang’s journey by saying that by the end of Season 1 his character finally accepts being the Avatar, and that Season 2 is entirely about pushing to fully become what he was always meant to be.
New Earth Kingdom Characters Enter Ba Sing Se
Netflix unveiled several new members of the Earth Kingdom cast in November 2024, with Chin Han playing Long Feng, Hoa Xuande playing Professor Zei, Justin Chien playing King Kuei, and Amanda Zhou playing Joo Dee. The political machinery of Ba Sing Se is now well and truly populated with formidable performers.
Kelemete Misipeka joins as The Boulder, Lourdes Faberes as General Sung, Crystal Yu as Lady Beifong, and Rekha Sharma as Amita. The introduction of this many Earth Kingdom players in a single season signals that the show is leaning hard into the sprawling scale and political complexity that made the original animated arc so compelling.
A further wave of additions was announced in May 2025, including Terry Chen as Jeong Jeong, Dolly de Leon as Lo and Li, Lily Gao as Ursa, Madison Hu as Fei, and Dichen Lachman as Yangchen. Several of these characters carry enormous mythological weight within the franchise, and their live-action debuts will be closely scrutinized by devoted fans of the animated series.
New Showrunners and a New Direction for the Series
With the original showrunner stepping away from the series to pursue other opportunities, Christine Boylan and Jabbar Raisani took the lead on ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ going forward. Boylan had served as co-executive producer on the first season, while Raisani served as executive producer, director, and VFX supervisor. The transition placed two people with deep roots in the show’s production at the helm.
When production on Season 2 kicked off, Boylan and Raisani said they were looking forward to digging into the deeper, more complicated relationships that develop as the journey continues, and they promised to show real-world versions of iconic scenes from the original animated series while also exploring stories the animation never told.
Filming for the second season began on October 7, 2024 in Vancouver, British Columbia, with production wrapping on March 21, 2025, with the second and third seasons filmed back to back. Early critical reception appears warmer than the first season, with Season 2 earning a 71% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes compared to 62% for Season 1.
With the Gaang expanding, the Earth Kingdom fully realized on screen, and Miyako’s Toph already generating enormous buzz, the real question fans are wrestling with right now is whether this version of Toph Beifong will claim the same iconic status as her animated counterpart — and that is exactly the debate worth having in the comments.
